Your current long gun of choice ?
Right now as it sits what is your current long gun of choice.
Not so much sentimental but your favorite using gun.
It's funny how as we aquire various guns and we ourselves change in various ways etc.
Right now it is NOT an expensive weapon. Over this last year I have moved to my Kel-Tec SU16(Bravo model) fitted with a Bushnell Trophy red/green dot scope.(Thanks 86er)
I use it for deer, it guards me in the home,it makes my varmints disappear etc. Also fun killing paper.
With that scope one turn foward of the dot intensity knob it's anytime daylight.
One turn backwards and it's inside dim or outside dim. I mean even outside at about dark. If you can see anything even at dark.Light green dot T on it. Almost to a point like a laser though a laser has its advantages but cannot hunt deer with a laser.
So what you choose?

Re: Your current long gun of choice ?
1881 Marlin 45-70.
Re: Your current long gun of choice ?
Gun of choice depends a lot on the game to be played. Some of my guns are hunting only some are competition only. Very few do both and none do both well.
Of late, the fun guns are the vintage Marlin levers. I have two up and working, .38-55 and .38-40 that are just plain fun to shoot, but are only okay has hunting guns for many things and okay for CLA competition. Another is under reconstruction that will be much more than just okay for hunting.
Probably my best all-around gun is a singleshot Sharps. But being just an all around gun, I haven't shot it in a couple of years as I have much better choices for whatever game is afoot.

Current "fun" gun of choice is my Marlin 27-S in 25-20

Up to 100 yards and in enough light that I don't need a scope, my '92 in .480 Ruger. Longer ranges or around dusk when it is almost at the end of the usable shooting light, my Stevens model 200 in 7mm08 with a scope on it. Now, if I had to pick just one, I am not sure what it would be.

My current long gun of choice is also my longest long gun and the cheapest, a Stevens 94 single 32" barrel 16 gauge .

Re: Your current long gun of choice ?
My favorite long gun of choice changes from day to day. Right now I'm still trying to get the geometries right so my 1894 Marlin can shoot both 45 Colt and Cowboy45Specials... Quite a trick as there's more than a ½" of difference in overall length. I've got the C45Ss down... but it keeps jammin' on the 45Colts.
17" octagon barrel & full length mag holds 10 45Colts and 13 C45Ss... It might just become my favorite long gun... if I can get it to fulfill it's potential!
But, in truth... I love all my children, EQUALLY! But some of them do some things better than others...
Brent, does Nambia have a "power" rule about allowable cartridges like some other African countries? My .40-90SBN falls just shy of SAs. At least with bullets that are most accurate in it.

Mine are a rotating group, depending on where I'm going out and what I'm doing. Truck gun, pre 64 94, recently upgraded to nicer wood. General carry is between the 71, and a Ruger 77 in 35 Whelen. The chopped 86 carbine also is good, especially in the thick stuff. A Mauser sporter in '06 is also in the rotation.

Re: Your current long gun of choice ?
For knocking around on our quad or Rzr, its hard to beat my .357 Puma or maybe my browning 92 in .44 mag. I like the .357 caliber better though.
Re: Your current long gun of choice ?
I have no idea. No one ever questioned me or my rifle or ammo. Indeed, most were climbing all over themselves trying to get a chance to handle it - and the ammo - .45-2.6-535 paperpatched. It is quite disconcerting to see one's only hunting rifle being passed around a bar - and worse still when a cartridge is being passed around at the same time and all you really want to be is be certain that you keep yourself between the rifle and the cartridge at all times.Griff wrote:Brent, does Nambia have a "power" rule about allowable cartridges like some other African countries? I think it would be legal in SA too. But no one argues with a cartridge that dwarfs a .458 Win mag.
The eland however wasn't too happy about it. But he only complained for about 5 seconds and 20 meters.

How is that '75 shooting for you?
That is one of the most attractive 75s that I have ever seen. I hope it shoots as well as it looks.

Re: Your current long gun of choice ?
It is "stupid" accurate. I've not owned a lead bullet rifle that shoots this accurate. Just over 1.5" at 100 yds with iron sights and 62 year old eyes!
I'm going to throw a scope on it to really let it shine!
Yup, it is quite plain, but beautiful in a "Girl Next Door" kind of way......

Re: Your current long gun of choice ?
Kinda thought it might shoot well. If you are looking for a good scope, I HIGHLY recommend the MVA reproduction of the Winchester B5 on that rifle. I have one of these that I use on a different sharps and a highwall and I really like it. It is my dedicated competition scope for BPCR now.
MVA makes other scopes that are good also but they cost more and are not quite as user friendly.

Mine's close --- 1895 in 45/70 for me --- mine wears a big (for the gun) 3x9 scope ---- i dont change the gun much, just the projectilesCanuck Bob wrote:For real work a 444 Marlin, hasn't changed in 40 years.
Its been the same since 2009 --- it works on anything but the small stuff
I assume we're talking about what gun we grab when its time to "go to work" --- i have a handful of .22's that get a lot more rounds downrange with plinking

All-around - Rossi 16" in 45 Colt, with Marble's Bullseye rear sight, Williams Firesight front sight, and Fastfire-II/LaserMax combo on a B-Square side-mount, loaded with 250 grains or thereabouts at about 1,000 fps. Good for bumps-in-the-night (in or out of the house), livestock patrol, whitetail (lasers legal here), and just plain plinking.
A 32-20 (lately the Remington 25 pump) if I just want to have 'fun' though.

Greetings
Down here is a 44 WCF 1892 made in 1907. Ugly, beat up, reblued and an 18.5 inch barrel. But sure is a honey to carry about the desert.
Up north there.. have a repro 1876 in 50-95. That is one sweet shooting but heavy rifle.

Of all the rifles I used for work and play, it seems like what I take on camping trips in my fifth wheel or long trips in my truck, or next to my bed is a .357 Winchester Trapper. It's a compact dependable little rifle. But for hunting, 45-70 , .308 and 30-06.

I sure got fooled, that gun does real well scoped & it was a windy day if the wind ever stops

I have a pair that are my "special ones" at the moment !
The first and not replacable is my grnadfathers old circa 1881/1882 W&C Scott 10 gauge .
And the second is my less then one year built 6.5-06 made from a circa 1962-1964 Remington 700 BDL . Fired it three times at living animals last season and got the pair of deer pictured and a rather large and dumb red fox .

I know you said Long Gun, but, my favorite shooter is a Single Six. Sitting in my lawn chair with a bunch of .22 I can shoot hundreds at a time at the wiley white rocks, or, empty shot shells someone left behind. I hit close enough to stuff 100+ yards away to keep my interest. Long guns? an early 60s 39 Mountie, or a 9422.....

Re: Your current long gun of choice ?
The one I grab most for general carry is my Steve Young worked '92 Browning in .357 with a Lyman receiver sight. I've shot that gun so much that anything coyote sized and larger is in trouble out to 200yds, as long as it's standing still. The metal is still in good shape, but wood was less than perfect when I bought it.
As soon as I get either my Miroku/Winchester '86LW in .45-70 or my '73 in .357 up to speed I'm going to semi-retire the '92 for a complete refinish job. Thinking about having the receiver and buttplate case hardened and I'll refinish the wood myself and a semi-gloss finish.
As long as the vision in my right eye holds out I'll be sticking to one of these guns for a general carry gun. How long that will be is anybody's guess.

For general around the farm use either a stainless Rossi 92 in 357 mag or a 94 that JES rebored to 38-55. The Rossi is the truck/tractor gun and the 94 is the walking around in woodlot/swamp or somethings-trying-to-eat-my-critters gun. Both see a lot of use.
