trade
Years ago I gave a friend a Enfield jungle carbine in really good shape, aftermarket stock; for his birthday.
He just called from N.M.
He wants to give me back the carbine for my 1946 Willys.
What think you?
I have 4 other 4 wheel drive vehicles.
5 if you count the Suzuki Eiger.
What think the members?

If the Jeep is in decent shape, $$-wise, you are not ahead. But, perhaps that is not an issue?

Re: trade
If the Willys has ANY condition and runs, I wouldn't do it. Early Jeeps are getting up there in value.
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.
Re: trade
Sentimental value aside, what's a sporterized Enfield worth? Not a whole heck of a lot.
Even if it's an immobile pile of rust the jeeps got to be worth a while lot more.

You've not provided a lot of information, but on the face it doesn't seem like an equitable trade.
Personally, I'd have to say no.

Pretty uneven trade... but then if you want to do your friend a favor, that doesn't matter

I think I did him a favor when I gave him the rifle.

Re: trade
From my own perspective, I would have to weigh the relative likelihood of my future needs/want... I.e.: if I keep the Willys, how much am I going to pay for an Enfield carbine, vs. how much will a 1946 Willys jeep cost if I make the trade.
For me, it's a no-brainer... I'd keep the Willys...

next question
will you ever need / want another?
I agree with the guys, not a good trade stuff-wise, would still be a good deal tho for your friend, if that's a consideration. plus you don't have to work on it if you trade it off. or do you?

Mescaline,
Is your last name "Kowalski"? Your buddy has the biggest set of nuts I have ever seen and coming from the East, I've seen my share.
Like antique Winchesters, old Jeeps have value, running or not. They don't make many of the drivetrain parts anymore and yes, those babies are in demand.
But.....being a capitalist, always looking to make money, my thinking may not be in line with your buddy. If he is a good guy and you see him often, give it to him.......after quizzing him why he wants it. Hey! I still have my 8th grade lunch money.
Whoa....whoa....whoa...there, my friend from the southwest.......I thought that old Jeep had my name on it...... -----6

He just did manage to graduate the sixth grade.
In the rural southwest there are many stories of this type of thing.
I learned how to vapor barrier a house from a man who could sign his name, but that was it.
Anything more complicated and I had to read it to him.
I am not making excuses for his behavior, but I doubt he knows this is inappropiate.

Re: trade
This type of thing is not all that unusual.
Some of you may remember the post I made about one of the residents who wanted me to shoot a wild hog, butcher it, put it in my freezer, and make it available to him as needed.
I did not do it.
Also every year I will get at least two requests for me to loan one of my 4 wheel drive vehicles to a person I really do not know.
They come to the mountains unprepared, and when they find the passenger car does not work well on snowy, icy roads; they want me to provide transportation.

Re: trade
The average 70% Enfield jungle carbine goes for anywhere from $400 to $550. I'm thinking that jeep is woth more than that in just parts.

The aftermarket stock pretty much killed any collectors value. Of course that's assuming it's an actual jungle carbine and not a Navy Arms, Gibbs, or another company's "imitation" jungle carbine.Nate Kiowa Jones wrote:The average 70% Enfield jungle carbine goes for anywhere from $400 to $550. Re: trade
The whole trade back a gift thing would annoy me as well. I am also typically a little more reserved on letting my FRIENDS solicit gifts from me! I sold and old Flat Fender Willys jeep for my brother on craigslist a few years back. He was going to let it go for $300 and I ended up getting him $800 and it was a rolling chasis with parts. He was at least nice enough to take me to lunch!
He is definitely not talking an even trade here! I would probably tell him, I only gave $100 for the rifle to begin with, I NEED SOME BOOT MONEY!
