If it was for Ultra match, compare it to Tenex. Both going for over $20/50.

We need more rim-fire factories in every state. Like cottage industry. If we could do it 120 years ago and make affordable ammo in huge quantities for the whole country and exhibition shooters. I do not see why we cannot do it now with today's technology.

We were in Wally World the other night about 9:00 PM. I saw some employees wheeling out pallets from the back to restock. I looked around the sporting goods section and saw a pallet with ONE case of 22 LR on it. I went and found an employee and got him to remove that case and sell me all I could buy, which was 3 boxes of the Federal 550 rd bulk packs. My total was $73 and change.

Re: .22 LR Ammo... Holy Buckets !!!
Yes, you can reload them. I used to do it as a kid. BUT you end up with corrosive, inaccurate ammo unless you can find a source for non-corrosive priming compound and factory rimfire bullets. We used a couple of CBC brand berdan primers, crimped them from the sides to loosen up the priming compound, dumped that into the case and then filled with 3Fg powder and topped it with a 3T buckshot. They were good for up to three reloads - IF you were careful to orient them in the chamber so that the firing pin would strike at 180 degrees from the first shot, then 90 degrees, then 180 degrees from that one. Obviously this would NOT work in a semiauto but did great in an old Winchester '67 singleshot and a Rossi double barrel derringer. We could get the primers and powder and shot dirt cheap but 22's were $10 a box - almost 40 years ago. One had to scrub the barrel well after shooting them or it would rust something terrible. We did it for a while, even using firecracker powder (bad idea) one time as a propellant. Sure do wish we had the chronograph info on THAT round! In a EOTWAWKI scenario I'd do it again for use in a singleshot if there were no other options but it is not economically feasible or advisable even in the current situation up in the US of A.Grizz wrote:I wonder if we could reload them? anyone know?

Re: .22 LR Ammo... Holy Buckets !!!
The wife was in our Bi-Mart yesterday and asked if they had any .22's. Yes they did! But all they had was old lead bullets, not the nice coppered hollow-points which the salesman assured her I probably needed. So she didn't buy any. I got a big laugh out of that one and so did a couple of the grandboys.
So today she was back in the same store and they had those same old plain lead things again. This time she brought 'em home! Anyway, they "allowed" her to buy 2 boxes of Remington Thunderbolt for $1.99 each. Which will soon be put to good use with the smaller grandkids I am sure.
So apparently Bi-Mart, which had been restricting sales to 1 carton per customer, is now restricting sales to 2 boxes. But maybe this is fixing it so there will frequently be some available when somebody wants to go out and do a little plinking. It is nice to see at least a trickle of 22's getting to the shooters now.

I know a bunch of people are waiting for "it" to get back to normal so they can begin hoarding. I'm one of them. I don't think this will ever really end. At least not for several more years.
And it seems like powder and primers are also in short supply as well. Same thing. Welcome to the New Normal.

Re: .22 LR Ammo... Holy Buckets !!!
A few weeks ago in the Owatonna Cabelas I checked on powder just for the heck of it. They had three pounds - 2 cans of 50 bmg and one can of something else. But the telling point was that they didn't even have any shelf space for powder anymore. I don't think they are expecting anything to change soon. Ditto for the shelves devoted to .22 rf. Almost no space and zero cartridges.
Meanwhile Dixie Gunworks is selling primers at $9.50/hundred plus $27.50 hazmat not including postage (note Cabela's doesn't charge that sort of shipping). Had to buy them by the 100, so 1000 would be $95 + $27.50, plus shipping charges.
I think this is very far from over.

Phoenix gun show had a ton of ammo, I don't need any so I did not check prices.
Plenty .22LR but not at a price I would pay.
And lots of powder and primers.
I picked up some red dot, but only because Blaine convinced me I need some.

"Demand Manufactoring" is the new way to increase profits, cut back on labor, and sweeten' the bottom line. Don't expect .22 ammo prices, the cost of a gallon of gas or meat at the supermarket to go down any time soon. . It's the new way of doing buisness

Primer & powder and a bullets are available locally. $28 - $31 a pound, $4.39 for primers. Bullets are just as high. But a year ago there wasn't any to be had.

It is technically possible, but very difficult. I recall reading about this 30 (or more) years ago. Getting the primer mixture evenly distributed around the rim is the first problem.

I don't think the factories are the ones making the money on this, at least not more than their normal wholesale, with whatever metals and components price increases they've had to deal with. The price increases are in the supply chain. Some of the main volume marketers like wal mart haven't raised prices much.BlaineG wrote:I would not make a very good CFO, but, if the aim is to keep prices/profits high, doubling production does not seem to be the wisest move....2571 wrote:I hear a new .22 rumor each week. Crony capitalism (aka 'socialism') - the big companies get oligopoly-maintaining regulations passed (and pretend to suffer and protest as if they don't like it).
Free-market opponents - they complain about 'price gouging' and want it outlawed, when inflated prices would be the primary driving force to fund whatever production increases were needed to meet demand and actually lower prices.

Re: .22 LR Ammo... Holy Buckets !!!
Look guys, its all common sense with some business sense thrown in by the manufacturers.
We all know that about 90% of all shooters are going to hoard when the ammo does show up. The ammo makers know this and they also know most guys will hoard until their money runs out or their wives throw them out.
The last thing the manufacturers need is to people to have 9485294 billion rounds in their basements. It will destroy the ammo makers continous cash flow when the 90% decide to pull from their own personal stock instead of going out to buy it.
Lets not pee off the stock holders by giving them a big check this year and nothing next year. People who do not receive dividend checks tend to put their money elsewhere.
The ammo manufacturers are regulating the ammo flow so this does not happen, especially with .22 ammo as thats the most popular...........and unreloadable.-------------6

this can't all be manufacturing.
Where are the Russians? Wolf ammo is great stuff - why don't they step up to fill the void?
There are commodity hoarders, but I believe it's mostly the government and specifically this administration hoarding through the budgets of every bureau over which they have control - not to have it, but to keep it from us. In the long-term, they will probably destroy it.

Re: .22 LR Ammo... Holy Buckets !!!
A good friend who's an FFL told me one of his distributors told him about three weeks ago that they'd received a HUGE truckload of 22LR ammo in. The catch was that since their sale of 22LR firearms had been down, they were requiring dealers to buy a firearm before they'd sale them any ammo. Of course my friend ordered a several firearms just to get the ammo, but not nearly as much ammo as he'd have ordered alone.
My local Walmart get 22LR every week, but by 7:00 a.m. every morning the guntraders on disability checks (they don't have to worry about getting to work) are lined up to buy it all. It's then resold marked up several times at the local flea markets and gun shows.

Wolf .22 ammo is made in Germany.
Our club just bought 7 cases of it, it's available.
Re: .22 LR Ammo... Holy Buckets !!!
I want some - OK, used to be E. Germany, but you would think somebody would pony up to the market if it was strictly a market issue.
I've had Wolf match on e-mail notification at midway for 3 years and have yet to receive an e-mail.

That's the way to go Hobie. Hoard, hoard, hoard. As a rule, I buy .22LR whenever I see it. I haven't shot any .22LR in the last few months but continue to buy it when I see it. I still think the most effective way to have affordable sources of rim fire ammo is have factories in your own state.
Find ways to insulate from the GD lawyers , call it a CO-OP. Run it like a utility company.
Every state has a more 2nd amendment friendly county then others, and unemployment as well.
Turn a empty supermarket or dept store building into a 22 LR factory.
