30-40 Krag 30-30
Is there a difference between the Krag or a 30-30. I'm not talking about a real Krag, but the rounds that they use?
Re: 30-40 Krag 30-30
The Krag has a little more get-up-and-go but the bigger difference is the Krag can use a much greater selection of bullets since they can shoot the pointy ones while the 30-30 is mostly used in tubular magazines so only flat-nosed bullets are allowed with the exception of the new Hornady "Leverevolution" stuff. There are some single shot and bolt-action 30-30's though.

Re: 30-40 Krag 30-30
Unless altered I thought krags were .30 army, better known as 30-40. I have a old original winchester model 95 carbine in 30-40. A lot different than my 30-30s.

The 30-40 is a mite spritelier. If all you need is two shots, I'd load up some pointy 130s and have a ball.

.
The differences are in case size/capacity.
Once upon a time:
".30-30" meant ".30 caliber, 30 grains of powder".
"30-40" meant ".30 caliber, 40 grains of powder".
A case larger than the .30-30's was required to accommodate the extra 10 grains of powder.
The .30-40 Krag is also known as the ".30 Army" & the ".30 US" - all well prior to the introduction in 1903 of the .30-03 Springfield and the .30-06 (in 1906), when it was the US service rifle round.

Purchase or borrow a good hand loading manual and it you will be able to make a side-by-side comparison of these two rounds. "Cartridges of the World" is also a good source for information.
The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....
