250 Savage, 14" twist, sideways bullets

Post by earlmck »

Yeah, we've kicked this subject around a few times -- how the older Savage 99's in 250 had the 14" twist which may or may not stabilize a 100 grain bullet. My friend Butch has one of those old beasts, and we had tried it with 100 grain Hornadys with satisfactory results. So Butch brought the rifle out last week just to blow the rust out of the barrel. He had run out of the Hornady bullets but got a "deal" in some Nosler ballistic tips (we have the Nosler factory nearby and can occasionally luck onto a buy in "factory seconds").

Light load using 4064 for about 2750 fps; and the sadly sideways story is:

Dang things not only went sideways, they trespassed on a nice group I had shot with the Sav99/308 and a plain base cast bullet (that's actually 5 shots in there)

The good news is that he is going to give me the rest of the box to use in my 10" twist 250 :D

That bullet should like your 10 twist better...

Not sure that necessarily qualifies as a light load in a 99 but of course as you know it seems to be a case to case situation with lighter bullets being the traditional solution.

Likely if you compare the length of the two bullets, the Noslers are longer. The shorter 100 gr bullets will work ok. Spire points are very marginal while the shorter soft points and round noses are fine in the 14" twist.

Ive been loading 4895 in my Dads 250 1-14 99 pushing a hdy 117 RN it is accurate and he takes deer and elk with that round, when running anything over 90 grains in a 1-14 it needs to be a RN bullet pushed to the max. as Iam running out of 4895 Iam going to try RL15. A hunting buddy just rebarreled a 99 to a 1-10 twist with a #5 contour 24" we will work up some loads for varmints and big game this spring. danny
A freinds meat bull one shot in the lungs with a 100 gr bullet from a 250 99.

Earl,
Back when I had a 99 with the 1 in 14 twist I just gave up on the 100 grainers and used 87 which would shoot groups the size of my little finger nail. The 40 or 50 deer I killed with it never knew the difference.

Big Skye, I have both 4895 and RL15, have yet to try them yet. Are moose always that dark?

Earl, My R-P 100gr SPP's factory loads only chronoed 2690fps average; out of my 24" EG. I had the Aguila 60gr SSS rounds print on tartget like that. Tho they grouped good at 25 yards
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

The 100 gr. Sierra spitzer bt. Game King has been very accurate in my 1895 Mauser 250-3000 /250 Savage .ROT IS 1 IN 14" BARREL LENTH 25-3/4". The little 250 likes the 87 gr. bullets as well. It is a tack driver, and very plesant to shoot. Tried the 100 gr. Nozzler partitions and the 117 gr.Nozzler partition's. fine bullet's but they would tumble,in my .250 . with the 14 ROT.,,,Dusty

The old 250 that I "inherited" that has the 14" twist spent its life shooting 87 grain bullets. Couple of boxes of loaded rounds came along with it, very light loads (2700 fps or so) with 87 grain speers. I have picked up a couple boxes of the Sierra 90 grain game king to use in it when that time comes along, though it shot OK with some 100 grain Remingtons I had laying around. And I also have a newer rifle with the 10" twist that will be quite happy with those 100 grain noslers.

I've been using RL-17 or 4831sc for my loading. These probably would get you 100 fps more velocity with equal pressures compared to 4895 or RL-15 if that is a consideration (speaking 100 or 117 grain bullets).

Hey earlmck... Your target reminds of the Savage 1899 I used to have a while ago. Besides having the slow twist rate the bore was practically "washed out" as one gunsmith put it. Don't recall what loads I used but no matter what I tried the bullets were key holing.

I remembered one day at the range I was trying out a load. Brought the target back and the guy next to me came over and said "Boy, those bullets are making some good looking key-holes on that target". My reply was "What do mean "key holes"? I call that "tomahawk-ing"! It's a Savage rifle what do you expect! The guy just turned around, didn't know what to say.
