Opinions on scope ring finishes, please?

With spring only months away it seems it is time to get rings for my CZ 527 223. It has nice blued metal, not too glossy, and walnut stocks. The scope for it is a recently acquired M8 4X Compact in gloss. My little M8 2.5X Compact is also gloss and destined for a leveraction probably. Rings are likely to be mail order.

It is likely to be Warne Medium or Millet Anglelocs. They have the lowest heights and that works best for my CZ 527.

Would you buy matte rings to better match the rifle or gloss rings to better match the scope?

Also I've encountered mention that some rings in gloss are painted or coated rather than blued, true?

Buy silver rings

Seriously, I usually match the ring finish to the scope, so it's less distracting (to me, not game or anybody else). If I'm buying a one-piece mount (like a DNZ) I might get a silver one to match a stainless rifle, regardless of the scope finish. Sometime I just get what's available, cause it never fails......

A lot depends upon what outfit I'm wearing to shoot. With something like formal evening wear, I like gloss. If I'm going business casual or some little cute fun outfit, it's matte for me.

Actually I'd probably go with the matte rings. I like to minimize glare if it's something I might take into the field.

I prefer to match the scope finish when I have a choice of rings, but, to be honest, I don't lose any sleep over it if it doesn't work out that way. Low priority for me.

Thanks guys, I took the rifle out last night for a couple hours of cycling to break it in. I learned a bunch about handle/scope clearance as well. The factory rings, way too high .550, are a faded matte tone. The little 2.5X Compact currently mounted is gloss and it matches the rifle well enough. Actually the little scope looks real nice on the micro mauser steel and wood rifle. My Weaver mount for the 444 is also a good match. I think blued steel matte in a Warne works for this combo. Their mediums are .425 high, the only lower height is the Millets at .395 but I like the joint for the scope mounting with the rings on the top of the rings, lots of clearance. Also the Millet Anglelocs get mixed reviews, love em or hate em about equal over lots of forum threads.

This little rifle has been an education regarding scoping. Due to its Mauser style bolt throw and a original chunky handle it usually requires real high rings for eye piece clearance. CZ has finally addressed this issue and mine came with a new factory modded handle with a great deal more clearance. Unfortunately no-one makes a real low ring which would be nice for my scopes and a compact cheek weld because for years scopes wouldn't fit without bolt handle mods.

There is a dandy carbine version, sadly RH only, with iron sights in 7.62X39 with a stock like a Marlin designed for iron sights. Folks really want low rings for them. They often talk about modding these rifles to a Grendal. James Calhoon the .19 gopher guru from Montana makes a small business out of modded bolt handles for CZ 527s. Now I understand why some folks like the 60 degree bolt throw rifles like the Brownings or Weatherbys.

If I ever buy another bolt action that will be given serious consideration, no knuckle bashing.

That's one reason I bought a Browning X-bolt instead of a Kimber when I got my .325 WSM. I've never had one like that before and sure like the idea of keeping the scope as low as possible. If I don't like it, I'll sell it and get a Montana or BLR in .325 WSM
