My fiancee is saving up for her very first big game rifle

Makes a man proud :)

However, she does like bolt guns and doesn't like levers. I guess I'll still keep her, though

Sweet!

I took mine out 2 weeks ago and let her shoot a firearm for the first time. Now we're talking about formal shooting lessons.

She actually wants a Savage model 14 in 30-06. I'm going to have her fire my dad's .270 first to see if she's willing to learn to deal with stout recoil.

Of course, reduced loads are also an option.

My wife has a savage model 10,(left hand)in .260 rem. Synthetic stock, detachable mag. Gun shoot's great and you can't beat the savage for the money. Another 1 to consider is the new marlin xl7. Good luck in the choice.

Jason... DUDE!

She's saving money for a gun ....

And you didn't go out and buy her one?

Sounds like a possible communication problem here.

I'm willing to pitch in, but she made it clear she wants to buy it on her own with her own $$ and minimal interference from me.

It makes sense in a lot of ways.

At least you got to the fiancee part. That took long enough. Whatever she gets, get her some loading dies for it (as a GIFT).

Thats awesome that she wants to buy her own.
She cant go wrong with the Savage but I think it's smart thinking to let her shoot the .270 first. If she doesnt like the punch then you can convince her to get a lever in 30-30  :D

If she gets what she wants she will be more likely to want to learn to deal with it. And - her choice is a good one.

Jason,
That's great! If she hasn't shot a centerfire much, you might (strongly) consider some reduced loads. Can you or someone load some? I've got a great .270 recipe with jacketed and there are pages of reduced loads for '06. Folks I've known for years kid me about shooting reduced cast loads until they try them. No need for all the noise, expense and recoil to puch holes in paper or cans. Easier to get acquainted with a new rifle too.
Keep your sword and your plow share, know how and when to use them.

You're 10 steps ahead of the game. She'll learn to love levers eventually - count yourself lucky!
