Lyman Loads for the 32-20 IMR 4198
I have some old Remington 100 grain JSP bullets for the 32-20. I would like to load these to close to the original Winchester H.V. loads (original velocity was 1,635 fps). I'm thinking of around 1,550 to 1,600 fps. My Hornady manual indicates no problem with 5744 but that is for a modern rifle. I would like to drop the pressure a bit so I will use a powder with a lower burn rate and am thinking of using IMR 4198 or RL-7. Does the Lyman manual give any loads for these powders (or IMR 4227) and, if so, what is the pressures?

Speer 12 would suggest you start at about 13 grs. for just under 1500 fps. In a 22" barrel for either 4198. Another 2 grs. should get you about 1675 fps according to their data for 100 gr. jacketed.

I just checked my Lyman #34 (1944) and the closest load I could find was a 115gr jacketed, with 10.8gr of 2400.......1555fps
The Lyman #39 (1953) shows a 100gr jacketed, with a max loads of 11.5gr of 2400 @1670fps or 11.8gr of 4759 @ 1675fps

I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

Kirk my lyman #45 (1970) lists 3 powders for a Remington 100 gr jacketed
unique 4.5 1169 fps start load 6.0 1476 fps max load
2400 9.0 1246 fps start load 11.5 1700 fps max load
imr 4227 13.0 1720 fps start load 15.0 1984 fps max load
notes: imr 4227 13.0 1720 fps accuracy load
2400 9.3 1278 fps factory duplication load
rifle was a 24" bbl savage sporter 1-20 twist 312 groove. this is for HV loading in rifles not handguns. danny
all bullet weights 80-115 jacket and cast had best accuracy loads with imr 4227

Kirk,
The IMR 4198 load may work for your application but will shoot filthy dirty.....
For .32-20 WHV equivalents I have found Accurate 1680 the best (for lower pressure applications). Pressures are low for muzzle velocity achieved; barrel stays relatively clean; they shoot accurately; SD's are low for me.....
IMR 4198 and Accurate 1680 have similar burning rates with 1680 acting somewhat slower in the .32-20...

Re: Lyman Loads for the 32-20 IMR 4198
Thanks, men. It looks like IMR 4198 will give a conservative pressure at 1,600 fps, since it has a lower burn rate than IMR 4227. I will start low and add powder until I get 1,600 fps. IMR 4198 used to be my main powder for the 32-20, but it was always for velocities closer to the original BP velocities.
