The Cowboy Competition, in .38 caliber was a .38 Special only rifle. They also made some in .45LC. These are easy to spot as they have color case hardened receivers. There was a run of standard Cowboy rifle that had blued recievers but were chambered for .38 Special only too. Pretty rare, I had a chance to buy one but didn't and missed out.
The CBC rifles are no longer being offered but you can still buy the standard 20 inch barreled Cowboy rifles they are still in production and are selling strong.

I have a 2005 Vintage 1894 Cowboy Comp in .45 Colt. It has the color cased receiver, lever, and lower tang .... 'er sorry trigger plate. The action was the smoothest I've felt for a new rifle, and the trigger is pretty nice.
It also appears to have had some work done on the lever where the pointy part causes the wear on the carrier.
It is marked COWBOY LIMITED, but Marlin has verified it's the Cowboy Competition model.
I think the only difference between the regular Cowboy and Cowboy Competition models is the color cased finish and a bit more internal factory tuning.

That is exactly correct with the .45s. At the time that these CBCs were being made, the only difference between the CBC and the Cowboy, where the .38 were conserned, was the caliber. The CBC wasn't able to chamber .357 Magnum rounds. Where the standard Cowboy could shoot both.J Miller wrote:I think the only difference between the regular Cowboy and Cowboy Competition models is the color cased finish and a bit more internal factory tuning.

The Cowboy Compitition in 38 is no longer available. It included a factory action job.
I was not refering to the 45, or the .357. Sorry about that.
