Navy Arms Henry 44 RF

Post by sureshot »

I was in a local gun shop the other day and spotted what I thought was a Uberti Henry in the used gun rack. I went over and took a closer look and found it was marked "Manufactured by Navy Arms Co." on the top flat of the barrel and "cal 44 RF" on the side.
Does anyone here know anything about this rifle? I'm pretty sure nobody makes 44 RF ammo these days so unless a Uberti center fire bolt would fit it and some brass made from something it would just be pretty much a wall-hanger I guess.
I would like to own one of these in 44-40 some day and was hoping this was it but will keep looking.

Steve :)

Some of the early Henry copies Navy Arms sold (I think they were made by Uberti) were in 44 RF. They made several runs of ammo for them, but its been quite a while since I've seen any.

It's quite likely it could be converted to center fire with the correct parts, but it would need to be chambered for 44-40 or 44 spl (I don't think the 44 RF chamber corresponds to any common centerfire cartridge), or whatever the action will handle length wise due to the carrier block and how the action is set up.

BTW, if anyone sees or has a box of the Navy Arms 44 RF ammo, I know a guy with an original Henry that's been in his family for a very long time, and would like to go shoot it at least once.
"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat." -Theodore Roosevelt-

Isnt it amazing how many people post without reading the thread?

You won't be able to convert it. The current Uberti bolt/firing pin assemblies won't even fit their earlier center fire Henrys and there are no parts available for the early ones (or to convert this). If you are very handy you can convert the current bolt and firing pin. I don't know what a .44 RF bore measures but I wouldn't be surprised if you might have some problems there and then have to rechamber. Next, in this action the overall length of the new cartridge must match the length of the original. Of course if you can pick it up for $300 then.....

Tell them that ammo is darn near impossible to find and horridly expensive when found, so they will need to heavily discount the gun.

Let us know what you buy it for! :D

If you're just wanting to plink, these conversion cartridges from Dixie Gun Works will work. Ooops... might not work... forgot about the two pins on the Henry and '66s. What does the reproduction have?
