Hodgdon To Stop SOME Powder Production

Post by Ray Newman »

From a January 13th, 2014 thread on the cast Bullets web site: “Hodgdon Stopping production of These Powders” --

“Just got off the phone with Mike? at Hodgdon Powder Company. I had inquired about the rumor that they were discontinuing IMR SR4759. He stated there is going to be one more run of this powder in 2014.

“When I asked if other powders were going to be stopped he said yes."

The powders are:

SR4759
pyrodex pellets
IMR 7625
IMR 4007
IMR PB
Winchester Supreme 780
Winchester AA Lite

The lack of Pyrodex Pellets will disappoint a bunch of hunters I know....Other than that, I suspect those being eliminated can be replaced by other powders easily....

I'll miss PB and 4759. Particularly 4759, thankfully I have an 8 pound jug of it and time to get some more.

Hmmm. Can't say I use any of those powders either. I think there are other things available that will fit the bill OK. -Tutt

4759 was the only one I've ever used and that was 20 years ago.

I do like 4759 -- a 4227 speed powder but much bulkier so it occupies the case more fully for an equivalent load. I suppose I'll replace it's function with 5744, but only when I have to (I still have most of a keg of 4759 left).

Same here - I sure use the heck out of 4759. When its all gone I guess I'll switch over to either 2400 or 5744. I started using 4759 on a friends recommendation based on his experiments with 2400, 5744 and 4759 in the .45-70. He found that the 4759 burned more completely than the other two. I use it in all my cast rifle loads.

They could stop all Pyrodex production and I'd feel better for all the idiots that use it!

Dang, I like the pyrodex pellets in my muzzleloader. Looks like I'll need to buy a couple more boxes before they are gone.

Griff, I run Goex in the old TC New Englander in .54 and my SASS guns. But the Remington 700 stainless in.54 with the 209 primer conversion kit puts the Barnes 275 grain bullets into just over an inch at 150 yards with the Leupold scope on it. I would hate to try and recreate that using loose powder. The pellets are just plain easy to use in hunting conditions where you just might have to reload.

I understand, but all the extra cleaning I had with my Sharps to prevent it from rusting really soured me on the stuff. It literally took three cleaning sessions with chemicals to get all the residue out... whereas Goex or even KIK only require water. Hot when I can get it... cold when its the only thing avail. is just as thorough.

"...just over an inch at 150 yards..." is a hard arguement to counter tho'!
