Anybody have stories/info on Plains Indians?

My wife volunteers and visits/reads to a guy who is dying of MS. He really likes the Plains Indians and anything you can add for her to read to him during the hour she visits each week would be awesome.

Tycer, I recommend TR Fehrenbach's "A History of Texas and the Texans" has a good deal of info about early Americans, including Plains Indians. I got this for Christmas, and have been enjoying it, along with some other books of a historical nature. Your wife sounds like a good woman.

Charlie Russell the artist wrote a lot of good stories. Some were tall tales, others pretty interesting historical stories. There were several of white guys that lived with Indians, and some of Indians. He went to Montana alone in 1880 at the ripe old age of 16, and lived an interesting life and knew a lot of interesting old characters.

Dunc McDonald is good, as is Injuns, and How Lindsay Turned Indian. Some of Russells stories are sad, may be best if she reads them first to get a feel for each one before reading them to her friend. I like man y of his stories, those mentioned pertain to the Indians more than most.

There was a Time Life set of books that were put out years ago called "The Old West."

There are about 20 books in the set. We have a few we have purchased over the years, "The Gunfighters" and "The Great Chiefs." You should be able to find them at your local library.

The Captured by Scott Zesch is a great read. It is true stories of white folks captured by the plains Indians on the Texas frontier in the late 1870s.

wow! american native archaeology was one of my passions in college! i studied with Geoffrey Coe, the NC state archaeologist and professor at Chapel hIll, and others . you are a very fortunate man!

Don't forget that there were plains indians in Kansas. The wagon trains crossing Kansas were not safe in the early years. Then, there is also Nebraska. http://www.native-languages.org/nebraska.htm

The horse who survived the battle of the greasy grass is enshrined in a glass case in the museum of natural history on campus at Kansas University. The person who designed the case made an error in measurement, and one vertebra had to be removed so that Comanche would fit in the glass case. I don't have much more right now.

We lived near Rapid City, South Dakota 1993-2004. The modern Lakota Sioux struggle with alcoholism and drug addictions, too.

i am just part cherokee, and i have read it at least twice......i enjoy it but i am sure i dont get most of it. i am more lunk head than spiritual i suspect.

Plains indian culture was not monolithic and varied quite a bit. Some were quite admirable and others were despicable. I would classify the Lakota as admirable and the Comanche as despicable.
