Here are some photographs of the rifle that took up residence last week. Haven't shot it yet... still, I am real happy with it.

I'm curious to know what the experts here think about whether the receiver is nickel plated.

Very nice, I have an identical looking Marlin 1889 in 44W, not plated, just well worn!

Just worn off case coloring looks like to me.

If it only shoots half as good as it looks you have a really nice rifle......

That's 100% original finish, after most of the case coloring has worn off. You can still see some of the case coloring towards the rear, of the left side. Take off the tang sight and if it was put on a looong time ago the case coloring will be vivid.

Original finish is a value adder verses an aftermarket nickel refinish. You did very well, for under $1000.

Done! Sure enough, it's vivid under the peep... here are the pictures:



Found a paper shim under the peep, and decided to leave it there for now. I included close views of the receiver so that you can get a better idea of how things have worn.

The seller thought that the rifle was nickle plated from the factory, but he had no factory letter confirming that assumption. He was probably told that by the fellow in New York he purchased it from. I am glad to have a considered opinion from you folks... was hoping you agreed that it looks all original.

The seller had it posted on a local forum at less than $1,000 for a year without interest. I bought it the day I saw it.

Just what I thought. Beautiful rifle still though. I'll be Turnbull could make it look just like that all over again if that's what you wanted. I remember setting up Wanamaker next to them when about all they did was Marlin cased colors, what they started with as I recall.

Looks like $450 would restore the metal... I'd be happy leaving the wood as is.

Their prices DO NOT include disassembly and metal prep. You'll be surprised how much labor is involved before they blue or case.

Thought about it... decided to leave the rifle as is. I'll save my pennies to convert my single six 32 to 327 instead!
