Magazine fed leverguns

Post by wvfarrier »

Why aren't there more of them? It seems that in today's "tacticool" world they would be a hit with the non - AR folks. I personally would love a mag fed marlin in 308 or 30-06 or hell 300 winmag. That that's a combat gun!!

Just the thought of a .300 winmag lever gun is enough recoil to induce stuttering... :) :) :)

I'll stick with my .38-55 thanks. ;)

Well, most leverguns are magazine fed. Just that tube magazines seem to've caught on the best. But seriously, there've been and still are box magazine fed ones on the market.

Believe that Browning's still making BLRs...including some or all of your chamberings. With a detachable box magazine.
Haven't heard of a tacticool version yet, but it wouldn't surprise me if they announced such someday.

One problem is the limited capacity of non-tubular magazines. The longer the round, the less difference, though.

I used to have a Rossi 92 Trapper in Ruger 480... it held 9 rounds!

My BLR is almost tacticool, being a 308 and having a Trijicon TR24 1-4X scope. ;)

Rutgers and Savages as well, and a few models of Marlin and Winchester.

The leverguns lose a few points with the tacticool crowd because they are difficult to fire quickly from the prone position.

I wish Ruger would make a 96/223 that used AR mags. :D

Savage 99C gets a whopping 5 rounds... and yes, tin-bending something a bit more useful is something I hope to accomplish someday.

BLR 308 holds 4. The short mags hold 3. The BLR is a light gun , with the magnums they aren't that fun to shoot. My 7mag and 300WSM went down the road, I still have the 308.

Mine sure wasn't (9.5# if I recall correctly). A Belgium made .308, my first lever rifle, and an awful gun in every respect. Heavy, poorly balanced, inaccurate no ergonomics. Why I bought it, I don't really know but I sure learned a lot about what I didn't like in a rifle from that thing.

Newer BLR's are awesome. My SHOT SHOW special in 358 Win holds 4 rounds and is extremely well balanced, light and easy to carry.

This one was doctored up by McPherson.

Ruger made their box-magazine fed 96 leverguns in 22 LR, 17 Mach-2, 22 WMR, and 17 HMR, as well as 44 Magnum.

They would likely have made them in several easy-to-adapt-to chamberings, such as 45 Colt, 357 Mag, 32-20, and others, if it weren't for the fact that so many prospective purchasers got their panties in a wad over the 'ugly' stock or barrel-band, or 'non-traditional' configuration...

Bummer.

Only one box mag fed levergun really ever hit it off with the military, the '95 Winchester, and then, the Russians.....after it got modified for clip reloading.

You can't fieldstrip one for cleaning as easily as a bolt action, and you can't kick the bolt open in the event of a jam. They're also a bit harder to work the action prone. Fast to use, but the other factors kind of get to me. I'd still take a clip fed Mauser or Lee-Enfield for general purpose use myself, as the various armies of the world tended to agree, if using irons or a red dot.

That said, a detachable (large) magazine levergun with a simple fieldstrip similar to say an AR (hinge for cleaning and bolt removal) with an M1913 rail and aperature sight backup would certainly have some fans in restricted states or countries (Australia, etc) I think.... they're ambidextrous and easy to teach people to use.

If the '95 had a 10 round magazine and they could build them quick, they probably would have been popular in WW1 or WW2 for fast moving fighting.

The tube magazine makes the lever the best hand carry rifle ever made in my opinion. The narrow smooth receiver without charge handles or bolts to get in the way is what makes that happen. I consider my Win 94 32 Special a very formidable tacticool rifle and my neighbors think its a cute cowboy gun from John Wayne movies. So it might be the ultimate tacticool because it is tactical and camouflaged as a friendly good guy gun!!

Never found non-scoped Mausers or Lee-Enfields particularly hard to hold or balance in the hand.

For that matter, an M16A1 or M16A2 is light and balances perfectly at the delta ring (rear of the front handguard) for long walks if it's not slung.

Leverguns are nice, but not perfect.

Maybe I don't look at it the right way. I'm not going to (zombieland being the exception) going to use a levergun for "tactical" purposes. Levers with four or five rounds, whether tube or box fed, have plenty of rounds to do what I want. If I need something for the mythical collapse of civilization, I'll take my Scout/Squad. Or if push came to shove, I'd settle for my leftie AR.

Thought, I do remember seeing some large capacity mags that would fit Remington's pump and semi auto rifles. So, maybe a 7600, or the no longer produced 7400 (the new 750 being all black and plastic just looks ugly, but might do for some), and those mags would do for some.

They tried that with the 7600P and 7615 (using AR mags) but priced them the same as ARs, so that didn't really work.....
