Who manufactured this .22?
A very old friend of mine passed away recently and I have been helping his widow sort things out and selling his firearms for her. I found this single shot bolt action .22 at the back of the safe and wondered who manufactured it. The only markings on it are "Ranger" and .22 CAL.

If you know somebody with an older Numrich Arms catalog, there is an index to cross reference store brands and the company that made them.
I want to say Winchester, but can not provide proof right now.
Don't know where my Numrich book is

I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

That bolt handle makes me think Marlin. I have a JC Higgins branded Marlin with a similar looking bolt handle.
Slow is just slow.
Re: Who manufactured this .22?
The various Sears Ranger rifles were manufactured by several different companies, but there was also a company called Ranger back in the 70's.
Re: Who manufactured this .22?
That stock puts me in mind of a Mossburg, but, that is just a remote guess.

Re: Who manufactured this .22?
Need a good picture of the whole action from the right side to tell if it is a Stevens or a Marlin, but it is one or the other. Sears used "Ranger" as their "house" gun brand for many years before the "J.C. Higgins" brand was cooked up. Most were either Stevens/Savage or Marlin, but there were other makes, including some made specially by other mfrs. solely for sale by Sears.
I have an early 1940s vintage "Ranger" .410 O/U that is "really," a Marlin Model 90. The guy that sold it to me clearly was thinking "Sears," but not "Marlin." Neat little gun.

I will post a picture of the right side of the action a bit later, having a beer right now after a few hours with the chain saw clearing up ice storm damage

Re: Who manufactured this .22?
I just can't remember, now, who sold them. Eaton's, or Sears. An old guy that had one here told me Eaton's sold them, he remembered buying it from them. Just can't recall the info I dug up on them. They shoot really good.

That is a Cooey. It appears to have the same stock as the Model 78 target rifle. This stock version used from 1939 to 41. It was not resumed production after the war.

The second model called
Ranger, post WW2 - A house brand made by Cooey for the T.Eaton Co. Ltd. Typical Ranger models were specially marked Cooey Mod. 39 Junior, Model 75 Senior or Model 60 Repeater.

I get at least a couple a year, brought to me by owners that lost the bolt knob. It unscrews! Can never find replacements.

Re: Who manufactured this .22?
My first rifle was a 22 Ranger single shot and that was back in the mid fifties. That rifle was about worn out when I got it. I completed the wear and it just plain wore out.

Well, I guess you learn something every day!
Like to check where the post originates from--never occurred to me that this was a CANADIAN "Ranger"!

Re: Who manufactured this .22?
I still have my grandfather's Model 34 Ranger .22LR. I ran many, many shells though it. The spring finally got too weak and it won't always fire so I quit using it. It was a Sears gun.
