What is the REAL name for a semiauto 'AK-47'...?

Everyone says stuff like "I love my AK," or "Do you have an AK-47...?", but personally, I can't say I have an AK-47, because to me, that is like saying I have an M-16 or an M-4, when in reality I have an AR-15.

What do I have, if I have a gun that looks like an AK-47, but is only a semiauto...???

An AKM is a stamped AK-47. The original AK-47 was a milled reciever.
Sometimes a semi auto AK is called an AKS. Romania made semi auto versions for training and called them SAR's

Nah, the Muslim version is the one where the stock is permanently folded or removed, because it looks cooler that way, it's easier to carry, and they're not going to bother aiming anyways beyond "Inshallah" and closing their eyes on full auto.

SKS translated (as he did) means semiautomatic carbine system Simonov.


The Chinese called their version the Type 56, usually has the spike bayonet.

They also called their AK the Type 56, which makes things confusing for everyone else.

Russian weapon designs always have the type of gun and the designer. The PPSh-41 submachine gun from WW2 was the Pistol Pulyemet (machine pistol) Shpagin (the inventor) and the year, -41.
The PPS-43 was the Pistol Pulyemet Sudarev.

The AK being the Avtomat (automatic rifle) Kalashnikov. The PK series machine gun, the P=machine gun (don't remember the term) and the K for Kalashnikov. M=Modernized (PKM, AKM, etc).
