Leverguns gun vise

Post by Ysabel Kid »

Leverdude's post called "Gun stuff" got me to thinking about gun vises. I didn't want to hi-jack his thread (I know - a first time for everything  ), so I figured I'd start this one.

I know there are plenty of good gun vises out there, readily available. I have a Tipton model myself, and it is very handy. Still, if one was to build a gun vise from scratch - specifically for leverguns, what features would be important? Have any of you done this, and if so, could you share pictures?

Yes, I'm thinking about my next woodworking project - the "ultimate levergun gun vise"! :D

Thanks!

What I think would be great many times is if I could secure a rifle on its side in a vice. I use my bench vice often with rubber jaws to do it often but that cant be done with a tube mag in place so I find myself simply laying a gun on its side to remove or instal screws on the side. That makes for rocky screw removal & while its been a long time I'v scratched recievers like this.

So theres my imput. I want one that I can rotate the gun onto its side.

Where do I get ordering information? :P

Theoretically, all you'd need is a regular gun vise (that secures the gun by stock AND barrel, not just laying the barrel in a groove) that was fastened to the wall. :) There, that was easy, wasn't it? 8) :D

That would work, until I wanted o work on he other side. Reckon I could buy 3 & mount one right side up, one on its left & one on its right side.8)

Seriously tho, what I was thinking was to make the but clamping section in a hay that it could be removed & reinserted on either side. The barrel end could remain in a fixed position.

Levergun's Gun Vise ...

Post by Paratrooper Dave »

3/28/08

Over the past several months I have been researching gun vice features and costs. As a result of this effort, I started a list of manufacturers and their models/features.

Recently, I discovered the Model GV-30 made by MTM Molded Products of Dayton, OH.

Well, I narrowed the list down to MTM's GV-30 and Tipton.

Ultimately, decided on the GV-30. Ordered it and it was delivered earlier this week. I haven't used it a great deal so far but its adaptabilty and flexibility is very evident. I could not be more pleased.

So, are you thinking of a wall mounted vise , that is hinged so it can fold down 90* ? And to work on the other side of the rifle , just open the vise , flip rifle over ? Sounds good 8)

Or a base for a bench with a pivot and 3 pins for stops . at 0* , 90* and 180* , that sounds interesting too 8)
