Sixgun got Ripped Off !!!

Post by TedH »

By ME!

Ol' Sixgun was selling a pretty nice 1954 Marlin 30-30 on here a while back, that he had robbed the buttstock off of. His price was fair, but I shot him an offer if he kept the scope, rings, and mount. We had a deal. Then he discovered a minor mechanical issue, and knocked off some more dollars if I was ok with making the repair myself, we had a new deal, and I saved even more money. :D

I got the rifle, replaced the broken firing pin and began the search for a replacement buttstock. I found a new, factory unfinished stock from Marlin on ebay. The box it was shipped in was postmarked in 1964! It had been laying around somebodys place for a long time before making it's way to ebay, and eventually my mailbox. It was more than just unfinished, it was grossly oversized in every dimension. After some time with the belt sander, files and dremel, I had a pretty decent fit for an amateur.

When I wet the buttstock and forend for final sanding, it was apparent they were not going to match well at all after being finished. I carefully applied some Acorn Brown dye, more so to the fore end, to get a good match. I followed that up with several coats of Tung oil with a good rubdown in between coats. I was pretty happy with the results. Then I added a 2-7x32 scope for load development, and she was back in business.

Image

I bought this rifle with the intention of making it a strictly cast bullet shooter. I had just taken delivery of Ranch Dog's new, redesigned 30 cal. mold. I cast up a mess of bullets to load in this 30-30, and my 30-30 Ackley Improved.

Image

I got out to the range and set up at the 50 yard benches. Pulled the bolt and eyeballed down the bore and adjusted the scope as close as my eye could get it. I took the first shot, and couldn't see any holes in the paper. Looked through the spotting scope and saw the first shot in the black bull. 8) Good sign of things to come.

I had 3 loads with RL15, and 3 with IMR4895. All 6 of the loads surprised me, but three were very good.

It's apparent this old gun has a lot of good shooting left in it. I almost feel guilty for having such a dandy levergun with such a small investment......almost. Thanks Jack. :D

If you stumble across a jug of Ramshot Biggame, snatch it up, my AI likes it very well. I bought it to try in the 405, but shot most of that jug up in the AI and never got a chance to give it a run in the 405 and haven't seen any on the shelves since...
Nice job on the wood.

I am going to take a guess that for all the "projects" sold between Armslist , Gunbroker, and the like --- maybe 35% get completed (unless they're easy -- like pinning one AR upper onto an AR lower )

But on this board, I'd guess the % of motivated project finishers is more like 80% !

The rifle looks good and shoots good ---- I don't know Jack (hey, ---  -- idont and I don't) --- but I think Sixgun would be more than happy to see you made something cool out of something he may not have gotten the time to get to ! Nice work !

7.62 Precision has a thread right now on messing around with an old Marlin's stock and forend profile also, if you haven't caught it yet ---------- I wish I could react to these deals occasionally

OK, I'm usually the last to learn of these things, but here are the facts.

I bought the rifle for $100

I sold the rifle minus the seldom seen flip over mount and scope for $250, but had to drop it to ? (I can't remember...$215???

I sold the mount for $100

I sold the vintage scope for $125

I used the buttstock for the 336 experimental rifle

profit--$340 plus the buttstock :D

Ha! Only bs en ya. :D
The true facts
I paid $250+ tax + NIC's check for the rifle and I kept the buttstock, mount, and cheap 10 cent scope.

We are happy for you Ted! :D Those old Ballard rifled Marlins shoot with the best of them. And you did a fantastic job of matching up the color of the forend and buttstock. Don't you just like it when a plan all comes together? That rifle is a "keeper".

This is where I got ripped.....Last week I passed up a like new 1950 era 336 Marlin 30-30 in the rifle/half mag. variety for 3. I just have too much stuff laying around. Starting to look like a gun junkyard around here.------------------6

I feel bad about that. How about sending your original 1886 SRC over to my sister-in-law's place in NY State, as I'll be there for a few days of R&R and can bring it back with me. Don't mention it ... Glad to help out with cleaning up your gun junk yard. 8)
