Drive US 70 between Las Cruces and Alamogordo, when you get to the Small Missle Range look to the side, you will see 50 of them, mounted on tracked vehicles.

Mescalero - I use to make that trip, either going from or coming to Ruidoso, quite often. I can't remember how many time I'd do that trip each year. I well remember the Small Missile Range. Never saw sight of anything like that in those days. Makes a man ponder what ol' Tio Sam's up to now. Times Are A' Changing, that's for dang sure!

Had a friend in those days who use to sneak onto the range and hunt Mule Deer. He'd hike in from US 380. Got some dandy's, you can bet. Invited me to go along one year. I declined the invite, needless to say. Hunting deer in the Malpais was adventurous enough for me. Shot my first Mule Deer buck in those rugged lava flows west and south of Carrizozo.

Took a friend to the doctor in Cruces one day.
As we went by the small missle range, there was a ton of GI's out there, they had the tarps off of them doing maintenence.
I remember thinking to myself, that is an awful of firepower.
I can't imagine any deer in them lava flows!
That is some rough country!

The first time I was over that RD they halted all traffic on San Augustin Pass, because a missile had blown a big a crater in the road and set the countryside on fire , we sat for about two hrs while they put out the fire and created a detour around the crater.
