knife
For you Canadian guys,
When I was young I had a fixed blade belt knife.
I was told it was issued to Canadian Air Crews ( which may or may not be true )
The blade was about 4" long slightly curved, no hilt. the handles were some kind of hardwood.
If looked at in profile the blade and handle looked like a gradual radius.
Hope this rings a bell.

Re: knife
I had one purchased at Herters for under $3...loved it ...lost it..Herters had gone under..couldn't get another..
This is plagiarized from someone else, but I love it!
I was born a gun owner.
It wasn't a choice.
I didn't become one later in life.

Re: knife
I have one by Cold Steel, called... oddly enough, the "Canadian Belt Knife".

http://www.coldsteel.com/Product/20CBL/ ... KNIFE.aspx
A whopping $20.
It's my go-to woods-walking blade and is affixed to my Rem 1858 gunbelt.

Re: knife
When you said Canadian the first thing I thought was Herters.
Cold Steel makes one with the same blade design but with some kind of plastic scales. Cold Steel calls theirs the Roach Belly.
I think if you look in the catalog for Smoky Mountain Knife Works you can find Cold Steel. IIRC there is also a similar knife made by Condor Knife and Tool.

Re: knife
They still make these in Canada and the Canadian Forces still issue a larger one to aircrew; can't remember the firm name, but if you google Original Canadian Belt Knife, I bet you'll find them.
Re: knife
.
FWIW, the "Canadian Belt Knife" design dates from 1958, when Dean Russell, a Canadian cutlery-store owner, designed a knife, and chose Grohmann Cutlery in Pictou, Nova Scotia, to make it.
His creation had an elliptical blade and a slightly offset, slender rosewood handle.
There's been almost as many clones/copies made since, as Carter's has pills.

Mescalero,
Do a search on Ebay for Grohmann knives. I've found several over the past year a pretty reasonable prices; their skinning knives are quite nice, too.

An old friend who was in the RCAF told me the Russel knives were the worst thing knife ever. Never owned one, myself, though.

Re: knife
QCI. Winchester, I have to disagree with your friend. I have a D.R. Russell knife and it is my favorite fixed blade knife. Holds an edge well, sharpens easily compared to others that hold an edge well, and it's ergonomics are great.

No matter whose army/air force etc and how good the equipment is, someone will always talk trash about any particular piece of gear.
I've heard a lot of good about the Grohmann's.

It's the knife I took to Alaska when I moved there lock, stock, and barrel.Mescalero wrote:How did you know?
It's in an interesting spot in Alaska, perhaps to be dug up after the coming glaciers recede.
