Has anyone cut down a lever 45-70 to 16”?
If so, did you like it?

Mine was an 1886 cut to 18". Lots of muzzle blast but really handy. Traded it off last week so I guess I didn't really like it that much.

Re: 16" 45-70
I had all the Marlin Guide Guns with 18 3/4" barrels of which most were ported and they were okay !
Matter of fact the first I obtained was in 450 Marlin and it was noticable but not objectionable .
My present short rifle is a circa 1966 Marlin in 444 with the barrel bands and a monte carlo straight grip stock . I had that one cut to 19" when I reblued and refinished it . Quite handy and very accurate !
I clocked cast bullet loads in it and a another gun just like it but with the regular issue 24" pipe and found with my full house loads in weights of 240-375 grains I would loose anywhere from 75-150 FPS for 5" of barrel . Note I used the exact same loads in both guns , so while the 24" gun would clock say 2200 FPS the 19" gun with the exact same load was never more then 150 FPS less for the average of the shots in each gun . A couple of the bullets stayed in the 75-90 FPS range . I did this with the Ranch Dog 240 , 265 , 300 and 350 grainers as well as my versions in 325 and 375 grains .
As to the factory 16" guns I had Marlin guns with 16 1/4" barrels in 30-30 , 357 , 44 MAG and 45 Colt . They were all okay expecially the 44 MAG model 1894P . They all shot well enough from the bench . But like alot of other guns they wore off after awhile . If I wanted them again and could only have two I'd most likely go for the 30-30 and the 44 MAG .

I absolutely love it. I'm getting great accuracy and minimal muzzle flash from my hand-loaded leverevolution equivalents I loaded using IMR4198. Bucks like a mule mute recoils not to bad. I'm in Montana now looking to try it out. (been here two days but had to wait for fish & game to open this morning so I could replace my license I left at home
) I remembered everything else, though
