Unexplained boom?

Post by TedH »

So last night I was out at the farm, in the shop talking to my Dad after coming out of the woods from deer hunting. All of the sudden there was a VERY loud BOOM!!! It was loud enough that the tin roof rattled and the windows shook, and I could even feel it in the ground. There isn't another place for quite some distance, so I didn't think it was any explosion at ground level. I assumed it was a sonic boom from a plane, as there are occasionally flights from Whiteman Air Force Base that go over the property. We searched the clear sky, but couldn't see or hear any evidence of a jet. All I could come up with was that it was possibly a meteor that made it through the atmosphere? I didn't think much more about it until tonight and I was talking to someone that lives about 10 miles away as the crow flies, and they said they felt it too, and it even cracked their basement wall! I have searched the internet for any news story that might have explained it, but I can't find anything at all about it. This was in Warren Co, MO.

Gojira!!

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

May well have been an earthquake. We've been having a lot of them here in OK of late and your description fits them to a "T".

When I was a cop years ago I worked with a deputy who is now the sheriff of this county. I'm talking to him and learning a little bit at a time here. In talking to family and friends in the area, it was felt and heard at least 8 miles as the crow flies from where I was. More to come........

At my place in N.M., if I drive to the top of the mountain and look west, as far as I can see is White Sands missle range.
Drive south to the rim, all you can see is McGregor range; also military.
I "hear" and "see" (strange ) things all the time.

How about this...

— Are Mysterious Loud Booms and Sinkholes
Linked to Earth Core Changes? Click for report with mp3 audio.

Illustration of Earth layers down to solid inner core
and layer temperatures. The surface of the solid core that rotates
in the liquid iron outer core is 6,000 degrees Celsius (9,932 Fahrenheit),
similar to the 5,505 degrees Celsius (9,941 F.) surface temperature
of our sun. Image by European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, ESRF.

And this...

November 14, 2013 - Chicago Has “Mysterious Source” 3.2 Mag. Quake, Loud Booms Again and Big Sinkhole. Report upcoming.

— “I'm very suspicious about the rumble followed by a boom because
they're definitely different than some of the other ones we've had.”

- Linda Lauterbach, Resident of LaGrange, Illinois,
who has been tracking ground shaking from Federal Quarry in McCook, Ill.

USGS couldn't pinpoint the source of 3.2 magnitude quake
felt in Chicago on November 4, 2013. Authorities are investigating
possible link to local Fedearl Quarry in McCook, Illinois.

These were both taken from a website http://www.earthfiles.com I'm not sure you can click here to hear the MP3 file, not sure if that part carries over in the click n paste thing.

We've been hearing loud bangs around here for some time in central Fla. No reason I know of for them to happen. could be some redneck playing with his chemistry set for all I know.
Just posted to let you know you're not the only one hearing them.

OK just checked, you'll have to go to the earthfiles.com website if you want to hear the MP3 report.

I've learned that the Sheriff's Dept had calls from all over the county regarding the earthshaking boom. The Sheriff has told me that he knew it happened on a private property about 10 miles down the road from our place, and I know the folks where it took place, I used to put up hay there as a kid. He didn't know yet if they were doing some sort of demolition, or if it was a purely recreational use of explosives, but there were calls from as far away as 19 miles as the crow flies!!! Whatever it was, I'm impressed!

Don't know about your AFB... but back when I lived near Tinker AFB in OK it wasn't uncommon for SR71s to take off and "boom" at barely above "legal" levels... and you simply couldn't see them when they did.

Very loud boom here at 12:35 pm today. Sounded like what we used to hear when the space shuttle landed at Edward's AFB which is about 25 miles away. That was always a double boom.

The shuttles had 18-21 sonic booms coming back to earth. Often one could be in range to hear more then one. Ground don't shake with sb's.

Actually they used to take off from here all the time. Booger Bill was a guard there. Used to hear occasional explosions from the Rocket lab at the far end of the base. B1, B2, and the Space Shuttles were also built here and the U2s still fly out of here. An old friend worked on the flight line at Edwards told me he heard things fly at night that he never heard out there.
