It's a great idea, but it's lost a bit in the execution. I wonder why he did not stick to the Fletcher class outline and armament? If he needed more beam, a Flower class corvette or maybe a Butler class destroyer escort would have worked fine.

It just seems like a lot of work and expense to create a very detailed and intricate model that isn't really a model of anything.

Maybe a PT Boat for that would suffice? I always thought it'd be fun to have a 1:1 (or more like 1:2 or 1:3) scale PT, fully operational (well, I'll allow maybe empty tubes!) - ever since I and others of our Little League team got a tour of the Inland Sea in Japan at full tilt courtesy the local USN's Admiral's personal PT, complete with polished teak deck--which we had to lay flat on @ full throttle--and brass everywhere.

I served on a Sherman class destroyer that was converted to a DDG; would love to one of those converted to a private yacht. Lots of room with all (well, ok, SOME) of the armament removed. I'm thinkin' "pirate hunter"!

I was thinking about this some over lunch. If you stay with the 1:18 scale then a Mk 12 5"/38 naval gun will have a .277" bore diameter, 10.5" long. The .270 Win isn't real efficient in a 10" bore but you'd get a great muzzle flash.

Alternatively, you could go down slightly to a 6.5 TCU (.264") or up slightly in bore to a 7mm TCU (.284"). Both of those do fine in a 10" barrel and the muzzle flash would still be realistic with a suitably slow burning powder.

Plus, you could get the round to function through a short recoil operated or roller locked (to avoid an unsightly gas tube or operating rod), box fed, semi-auto pistol that could be mounted in a fully trainable scale copy of a 5" turret and fired with a solenoid.

Or I suppose you could design lever action that would fit in a scale turret - sort of a .223 caliber BLR with a large box magazine, re-chambered and re-bored for 7mm TCU - that could be servo operated. I'm not sure on that though as I ran out of napkins to draw the blueprints on.

All you have to do is get a Letter of Marque and you'd be set. Theoretically the .gov can still issue them, but they won't.

Cool, but impractical as it don't have no power.

I say a small block Chevy with a mild cam and light compression for longevity and quietness.

A quad fifty on the front, operated electrically from the bridge and a GE mini gun on the back.

You would have the whole lake to yourself. An occasional burst from the mini gun would keep the yuppie sailers away.----6
