The Only Good Hog.....

Post by Todd1700 »

... a dead hog. Caught this one rooting a hole the size of a kids swimming pool in one of our freshly plowed fields. Put a 200 grain corelock from the little Marlin 336 in 35 Remington through her. Quartering away shot at 75 yards. Bullet went in behind the last rib on one side and out behind the shoulder on the other. Hog was covered in so much dust when the bullet hit it looked like you hung a filthy rug over a clothes line and hit it with a bat. Hog only made it 10 yards. I think I am going to like this 35 Remington for a hog gun.

I think I need to get a .35 caliber. I shot a big hog last night with a 7mm-08 and it staggered off. No blood trail, no squeal, no evidence other than the whop of the hit. I shot mine in the shoulder as it was facing sideways to me. There was a branch where I couldn't aim lower without risking hitting that branch, but it was a good solid hit and should have done the job. Congrats on a good shot and getting yours.

I like big, heavy bullets for hogs. High velocity doesn't necessarily mean success. I've had good luck with .44 Rem. Mag., 240 gr. XTP HP's in my Marlin 1894. I need to try my .35 Rem next time.

Coupla' years ago (or thereabouts) I recall that 86er posted a video where he was shooting hogs at a bait station. He got two lined up just right and they were both DRT with the one shot. 35 Remington & 200 grain as I recall. Maybe he could resurrect that video for you fellers needing that bit of extra incentive to push you into the 35 Rem game.

Not too many better hog hammers than a good old .35 Rem.

"The only good hog" made me think it would be pics of one on a spit over a fire but it looks like I got ahead of the process. Hope it eats good. Oh, and welcome to the fire.

Curious about your loads, Chris.

86er expressed some interest in loading down a .356 some time back and out of curiosity I tried a couple of light loads but never followed up to develop anything of note along those lines.

I'd be interested to hear what other folks have done, if you'd care to start another thread.

:)
