My Savage 311 came with a bolt holding the trigger guard on, it had to go but how do I get a replacement in England? well I put a request on the classified forum and in no time at all wolfdog answered my quest and sent me one from Numrich Arms, he wanted no payment other than I give the cost of the screw and postage to a deserving Veteran.
So the money went straight to the Gurkha Welfare Charity box at the Winchester Gurkha Museum.
Thank you Russ, the bolt had damaged the thread but I did get the screw to fit.
I also found the Savage had not been British Proofed so legally should not have been sold, I informed the seller and they refunded £50.00 so it only cost me £75.00 or $120.00....
BTW the 311 took down the first three woodpigeons that came over while I was testing it...

I'd like to know more about the "proofing". How's it work, do all imported gun have to go thru this? How do they determine the pressure limts on the proving of a USA made gun for example.

I hope this link helps, only guns made in certain countries that have a national proof house rather than a manufacturers proof are exempt from British proof.
The Stevens/Savage 311 are neat guns. I bought a "Riverside" that's been refinished and restocked, cut checkering, 28", full/full for birds back in the '70s for about that same price ($150 IIRC). Shortly after I got ome from VN my apartment was broken into and almost all my guns & cameras were stolen. This one wasn't, so I cut it down to 20". After I started shooting it in CAS, one of the firing pins got to the point where it'd go if the right barrel was fired first.
Looked it up and found that Riverside was a "store" brand of Stevens. And the 311 parts fit! Ordered new sears and firing pins, still working today!
The only problem, with it's shorter barrels, they don't have enough weight to stau fully ope.
Handsome working guns, nothing fancy, but plenty of bang for your buck! If it's in good working order, they seem stout enough that they'd pass proof.

Having been a Barrel Filer at Westley Richards a long time ago, I have no doubts about this gun passing proof with flying colors....that's if I even bother to send it.
What I'd like to know is how it got here without being proofed?

I had a twenty just like Petes I bought new for 135.00 when I was a boy. I did the quail,ducks,rabbits and partridge great harm with it and really regret selling it. Enjoy !
My very first scattergun was a 20 gauge model 311 I got when I was 16, wish I still had it. Sold it to finance a date with a cute gal. 33 years later she's still with me I guess it was a good trade off.

It's the length of the cocking rods that prevents these guns' staying full open.. It can be a real nuisance at times, especially when shooting CAS, where rapid reloads may be required..
I prefer manual hammer guns, for several reasons.. The barrels on non-ejector guns drop open and stay open, and I can tell at a glance or a touch if the gun is cocked. I can also decock a hammer gun, without breaking or firing it..

I seem to be starting a collection of Savage/Stevens shotguns, my model 79 12gauge and my model 94 16gauge.
I'm looking for a Bolt Action next, a 20gauge would be nice.

The 311's are a favorite of mine also. Good workhorse for getting the job done.
My favorite 311 has the plastic stocks that were stamped "US Proprety". Bought it from an armorer who served on a Essex Class Carrier. He said it was the Admiral's clay pigeon gun for popping "bids" off the hanger deck on slow days. The armorer was at the decomisioning service and was "awarded" the 311 by the Admiral for faithfully keeping it clean and "ready for action".
When up north in the US of A I use a Fox B ( fancy 311) to work on the crow population around the Danville, ILLinois area. Have several sets of barrels fitted to it. One 30 inch barrel has the chokes reamed to just .003 constriction for shooting .685 roundball loaded in wads at 1550 fps. Will shoot under 6 inches both barrels at 50 yards. I did add sights to help with alignment. I still have dreams of tackling some big nasty critter one day with it.
