I've got a few leverguns already, but a couple weeks ago I put a new Winchester/Miroku 1886 in .45-70 on lay awake. I should be able to get it out of quarantine in 2 or 3 more weeks. Then I'll need some dies etc (already picked up some Win brass) so I can start working on a load for it. I'll be trying 5744 and SR4759 down around trap door velocity. I doubt I will ever load any shoulder busters for it
I have used the Lee 'Factory Crimp' die set for my 45-70 loads and liked them. You can load some cat-sneeze level loads with SR-4759, on up to pretty stout ones. No reason to 'hot-rod' the cartridge, though in the right gun it could be fun. I once thought of getting a Ruger No.1 in 45-70, but then would probably have had to switch my Marlin to a 450 Marlin to ease my fear of wrong-load-wrong-gun happening. Instead, I got a 375 Ruger 'Alaskan' for when I really feel the need to blast something...
Of course if you really wanted the best big-bore levergun, you'd have gotten a 444 Marlin. . .

and Welcome to THE Forum. "Shoulder busters" being such a "relative" term... did you get the carbine or the rifle. I have a Browning/Miroku '86 rifle... I can do well with it due to the added weight of the full octagon 26" barrel. And I keep my bullet weights below 400 grains, my favorite being the 325gr I keep to about 1300fps.

Welcome to the fire! I have used KirkD's recipe for the .45-70 Government with 5744 - 26 grains with a 1/3rd sheet of TP lightly rolled. Very comfortable load!
Welcome and, if you don't mind sayin', where in Ariz?
I shoot an original Win in 45-90 and load it with a 300 grain gas checked bullet and 30 to 38 grains of 5744. Use the same load in my Browning 45-70 that's been shortened to a "fly fishing gun" by some guy from Alaska.

I forgot to say I'd be using 405 gr lead. Going to buy some to get a quick start but a mold will be a near future purchase. As will a Williams FP sight.
My shooting budget has been pretty small the past couple years but hopefully things are getting better.
