Y2K and the Court of Honor

Post by Ysabel Kid »

It was a very busy weekend!

My Mom is moving, after almost 25 years in the same condo, to an “independent living” community. She is very excited. So are we – as she’s now only 10 minutes away from us. We’ve been helping her move, a truckload at a time – just light household stuff, as movers will be hauling the furniture next Monday (with my back now, moving heavy stuff is not smart). Saturday we helped all morning, then headed off to Y2K’s Boy Scout troop “Court of Honor”. (We also helped Mom much of today after Mass, installing additional shelving in one of the bedroom closets and the laundry room).

The Court of Honor was fantastic! We decided to hold it outdoors at a local park, and the weather actually cooperated for once! Normally, if our scouts are outside, it is either raining cats and dogs or it is unbearably hot. Saturday was sunny, mid-80’s and almost no humidity to speak of!

A Boy Scout Court of Honor is where the scouts are officially recognized for their achievements – both rank advancements and merit badges. Y2K is the Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) for his troop – the top youth leader. As such, he developed the entire program for the event and led it. Here’s a picture of us at the ceremony – Y2K is the handsome young one on the left, and I’m the old fat guy on the right.

Image

As the “Advancements Coordinator” for the troop, I was up front during the ceremony to help hand out awards. We have 25 active scouts in the troop, and they earned a TON of merit badges and rank advancements! Here’s a picture of me at our makeshift podium, discussing the achievements of the boys.

Image

Here’s Y2K receiving his merit badges, shaking the hand of the Scout Master, and standing between the Patrol Leader for the “Canebrake” Patrol and me. Y2K has now finished up all the Eagle-required merit badges and as a Life scout, is ready to begin his Eagle project!

Image

As you can see, Y2K is almost as tall as I am!

Finally, Y2K hamming it up with some of the other senior scouts in front of the “Rank Board” he and I made a couple years ago. Y2K is on the far left – and is a bit over 5-foot 10-inches now! The scout on the far right is over 6’6” and he’s still growing!

Image

So, another very busy weekend. I am so proud of Y2K. He did a fantastic job MC-ing the event. The Scout Master has asked him to consider staying on for another half year of so as the SPL because he is doing such a great job. He’s getting closer to that Desert Eagle every day! (on the goading of some of you fellas, I managed to promise him an “Eagle” – a Desert Eagle – if he got his Eagle rank. Thanks again guys for helping me spend money!!!)

That is something to be really proud of for you and your wife. You raised a kid that will do good things with his life.

If more parents took as much effort to do the right thing and "invest" in their children the way Jay and his wife have done, there would be a whole lot less issues today.

Kid, For real, you guys have done an excellent job to which we all commend you.

And Y2K, you are a true American. Good job young man and keep up the good work!

Congrats Y2K, what a fine example you are setting. Kid, at 5 foot 10, perhaps it is time to refer to him as MR. Y2K.

Congrats to you both Jay! Can't believe how big he got.
