I posted this on another forum and I'll try hear also.
Ok, I cleaned my 92, put on front band sling swivel (will need shim)
Punched out safety drift pin, but now the safety won't move at all, have to hit ear with light hammer touch to go from F to S
Do I need to remove it with a pair of pliers, I don't want to scratch anything up ?
In addition, it seems that the firing is now free floating, there is no spring tension, I can shake the gun and the pin will go forward and backward ?
What to do ?
wll
Did I mess my 92 Safety up, can't remove !

There is a little ball and spring in the safety shank under the wings..may have jammed up..try pulling it out with your pliers..(there's two sets somewhere on my gun room floor). You won't be needing them again..Les
This is plagiarized from someone else, but I love it!

Other than the interference of the bolt safety, there is nothing to impede the movement of the firing pin of a 92. They are free floating.

I can't remember the details of replacing mine, so can't give specific advice, other than DON'T PANIC...you will shortly hear from someone who can give details, and probably photos, so it will be ok.
What I CAN tell you is that without that flimsy safety, you will have a SAFER gun.
I am not opposed to the positively-functioning Marlin cross-bolt safety for instance - I leave mine intact, as they stay ON when ON, and stay OFF when OFF. I find the Rossi ones are more designed to please lawyers than shooters - they satisfy some legal requirement, but tend to not stay ON or OFF reliably. That is worse than NO safety, IMHO.
I also feel the exposed-hammer design needs no additional 'safety', especially with a nice 'half-cock' notch. I tolerate the Marlin design because at least it is 'positive' and works.
I think the Rossi is SAFER without the 'safety', and agree with plugging it up. You will get it done and have a safer firearm ultimately.
I suppose one could use some super-glue for the task, but a well-designed 'plug' seems more reliable.
You're ok - just take a deep breath and wait for some sound advice from someone with more gunsmithing knowledge than the rest of us.

It was messed up to begin with. Sounds like you are well on your way to fixing it.
Is the safety down in the normal position, or up a bit? It seems I remember on some that the spring pressure sometimes cocks the safety to the side once the pin is removed, making it feel sticky. Is it possible that when you removed the pin the punch dinged the safety, making it stick in the groove in the bolt?

Ok guys, fixed it !
took a plastick hammer and hit the ears a bit, and it broke loose .... a burr was probably causing the problems.
I have cleaned the action and have decreased the gun (although not much to degrease, this gun was very clean)
I installed the front sling swivel ( had to shim), I took off the ridiculous safety and replaced it with Steve's unit !
I will drill the stock for the stock swivel and then look for a short case.
This little gun is bad A%*
