Re: Squillicide Gunz
Since my only Squirrel Hunting Area is Shotgun/Muzzlestuffer Only - my Rossi RioGrande .410... if I can ever get a day off.
Though I might try the 1377 too.
Season isn't until Sept 1.

I love hunting squill with .22, but worry about shooting downrange a mile or two....I'd use a .410 H&R, or my Uplander 20 ga hammer gun.....

My ol Remington Nylon 66. I've had that rifle for 40 years and still like to get it out. I'll probably get my Henry Golden Boy out too.

If under 50 yards...
Ruger 96/22 LR with 'Operative' replacement barrel - integrally suppressed.
TruGlo optic I keep on it because since it is suppressed it is my favorite 'newbie' teaching rifle.
If beyond 50 yards...
Ruger 96/22 WMR with 4x optic
I had a second 22 WMR one I converted to 17 HMR, but I think it would explode a squirrel unless there is non-fragile bullet loads you can get.

30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Once the leaves are off the trees a Rossi 62 Octagon pump 22 with a Marbles tang sight. But until then, a '52 vintage Remington 11-48 in 16 gauge.

I want to try and use my Stevens 235 SXS 12Ga. (ext. hammers). I have some 12Ga. brass shells that I think Ill load up and use with it.

Re: Squillicide Gunz
FWIW, I use CCI FMJ's in my .22 Mag for Squills - and I always wait to make sure there's always a backstop, where the Squill's either on the face of the tree or that there's a tree trunk behind it, due to the penetration issue.3leggedturtle wrote:

Those little grey/red buggers are fun to hunt but protected in Washington state.
I spent many a day in the woods hunting them as a kid back in Iowa though.

I only shoot them either on the ground, or if I'm on a hill looking down into a woods-valley and the other side of the valley is a clearly visible backstop. As a kid I was taught NEVER to shoot something 'up' in a tree other than with a shotgun.

Old Ironsights, I would be honoured to hang out with any levergunners, anytime anywhere.... I'd need plenty of warning though, so I could let the Squirrel population build up first..

I'll switch between one of my Marlin 39s, a Mark II Ruger, or my recurve.

Re: Squillicide Gunz
I live in a neighborhood, so need to go quiet. The little tree-rats will be trying to invade my attack again soon, so I'll use a Stoeger X20 Supressor .22-caliber air rifle. I removed one of the screens from a window in my home office, which gives me an unobstructed view of the back yard and woods behind my house. Y2K and I will be in competition to see who can thin the herd the most.

Re: Squillicide Gunz
I dunno. I've only shot a couple with mine but both were in the head and probably not more than 5-7 yds.

Re: Squillicide Gunz
Sad to say the fishers have cleaned out most of them. I see very few. But that doesn't stop me from carrying my Marlin 39A when I'm in the woods. I do have a 32 caliber muzzle loader that I want to give a try.

Re: Squillicide Gunz
I kinda hated to post in this thread on account of realizing that I just don't feel like I'm eager to take a levergun after small game this fall.
At the moment, it looks like the following: the Winchester Model 63 that's just incidentally behind the Marlin SBL in the photo (no, the SBL isn't for Squills; they usually aren't tough or dangerous enough around these parts to need shooting with a .45-70, but at least I snuck a levergun into my post), the Kimber Hunter model that got skunked on the snowshoe hare hunt that its picture was taken on or the Encore with the .22 barrel installed, which takes down small enough to fit in the attache-sized case that's kind of peeking out behind it in the picture and would make it easy to haul on the bike until the weather changes.
