What Do Y'All Recommend For A Quick Open Handgun Safe?

Post by Blaine »

My daughter has a couple decent handguns I gave her, and she has a female roommate she shares a place with....People coming and going...you get the idea...These are decent "No Paper" weapons, and I'd hate to see her lose them, but, I want her to be able to get to them in half a heartbeat....
I've seen the Homak, and have one of their rifle safes....
(as an aside, I'm allowing room for a Homak safe in my van that would be bolted to the side wall struts...they are only 10" deep and would be perfect for traveling and such....)

You can always go to the combo format if you need to.

I have three of the GunVaults that are NOT the 'biometric' type. Just an ordinary four-button combination lock. No problems other than one I had to take apart and adjust the latch mechanism to close more easily. Took 15 minutes.

We keep one upstairs, one downstairs, and one at the office just as a 'demo' to show parents what they can do as a safety measure.

All three of my Gun Vaults refuse to accept reprogramming when the batteries are replaced. They are now key operated only. I bolted them on top of a Stack-On.

and when the "Boss Lady" loses the key the next step is a hammer and a pry bar!
I haven't done it yet but there's three Colt Delta mags in mine along with two AR 20 rounders.

My patience is running thin. The key is nowhere to be found and I'm about to bust it open!
The batteries last about 3-4 weeks at the most.

Gun Vault. There are others that are similar, but you need to make sure that they don't have a "beep" that can't be shut off! Also, some of them have a display or other lights that can't be shut off and will give away your location. If I'm reaching for my Gun Vault in the middle of the night, I want ME to be the only one who knows about it.

Gun Vaults work and are well made.
Cheers,
Oly

Well, The gun vault I have is the Nano. If she's not home, it would do to deter casual lookers. If she's home, I would just leave it unlocked. Heck, one of the guns should be on her hip 90% of the time anyway.
Kind regards,

gunvault is the way to go.
nobiometric , lots of choices in the size department.
how "blond" is she? you just lay your hand on top in the
finger grooves and press the buttons. always use the same hand,
and you can program what ever sequence you prefer.

i have this one, paid a hundred bucks, so this is a bargain.
and the batteries last a good long while, i change them once a year

True.

As far as "not accepting a new code program"I don't know if this will help, but there are two very different versions of the GunVault, and two different owners manuals and procedures described. It could be that you have the wrong manual...??? I say that because one of mine is the 'older' version circa 1985 or so, and I had to download the older manual to figure out how to re-program it, since I'd lost the original manual. The manual for my 'newer' (2000?) model gave reprogramming procedures that just wouldn't work on the older one, and I think to get the older manual I had to actually contact the company, as I couldn't find it on the website at that time.

I thought about mounting an additional battery-pack and a switch so I could just flip the switch when one pack gets low and then take those out and replace them, so no power-out and reprogramming needed, but once I figured out the proper code sequence I just do it that way. Or just adding an external power jack for an AC adapter (the 'deluxe' models come with that already).

Here's where the manual(s) can be found, at least some versions: http://www.gunvault.com/safemanuals/
