prayers for the people of Lake Megantic Quebec

Post by iceman »

Early Saturday morning a run away freight train carrying crude oil derailed in the center of the small town of Lake Megantic Quebec (population 6000) The resulting fire destroyed 30 building and the evacuation of 2000 people. So far death count is 5 dead and at least 40 missing.
The train had been parked outside of town (uphill) and for some reason brakes released and the train roared into town unmanned.

Very sorry to hear, and will send some prayer up for sure.

Prayers up. Even for the survivors, their whole world was messed up big time.

Very sad. Prayers offered for the People of that community.

Who parks a heavy load at the top of a hill hovering over a town? Stupid.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Thanks to all. They can now start to get closer to the rail cars safely. Confirmed dead is now 13 and the missing is up to 50. Officials are asking people who have reported people missing to bring anything they have that could have DNA of the missing ie tooth brush, hair brush etc. I guess what they are finding is not recognizable.
Police forces from across Canada and the northern states have offered assistance in helping to find the missing and try and find out how this could have happened. Still a lot of good people out there.
The little town looks like a war zone. The oldest buildings in the town are gone, along with all the archives of the area that were kept in the local library which was destroyed. Material things can be replaced, but people and some of the historical material are gone forever.

It has been a little over a week and they have found 33 bodies and identified only 9 so far. The inspection of each building destroyed by the fires is a slow process due to high temperatures/humidity (95deg F + high humidity) and contamination of the soil due to oil spill. the firemen have to wear hazmat suits and only work 15 to 20 minutes shifts before being replaced by the next shift of workers. the remaining 17 missing are presumed dead.
This is an awful burden on such a small community and each prayer is appreciated. There are better pictures available now by simply using google and entering Lac Megantic. So many questions and so few answers.
