Took a trip too Duluth.

We drove up too Duluth and up the north shore today to see if we could see a big ore boat. The only one we saw was the one they have docked at Canal park.
We didn`t take the tour today it was to hot but got some pics of the outside.
Massive and the steel plate muct be inch or more thick.
Also took some pics of split rock light house and a 2-8-4 locomotive .

I rode thru Duluth on the 2 a few years ago...2 from where it started to dang near the Pacific Ocean.....one of the great trips.....Wished I could have know ya then and said hi...

Missed ya Pitchy. I'm working 2 1/2 hrs. north of Duluth. I can't believe you didn't see a big ship come though the piers. Just a month ago there was a back log of ships to get in and there were up to ten at anchor out in the lake. The Irvin tour ship is too small to haul iron ore now. The big ship 1,000 feet and beamy. They are mostly black in color and the older ones iron ore red.

Minor typo there: It's a 2-8-8-4. Those DM&IR jobs are among the most powerful locomotives ever built, somewhere around 8,000 hp. Nothing today matches them. They're a spiffy bit of 1940's engineering and construction. Too bad the thermal efficiency was on the order of 5%.

Owen that would of been cool, Blaine yepper and yep i caught i miss typed the comfig on the train.

Ollogger, i reckon i need a train that hauls ore to my pond and a elevator that loads the Fitz.

Cool I have not seen that. In May I posted a vid. of a thousand footer going out from inside the harbor on YouTube. Maybe I can find it.

I see you have a interest in big ships that have givin way to Lake Superior. I used to dive and do a lot of boating on the Big Lake. Here's a pic. of a ship near the surface on the bow and a hundred feet deep at the stern.

Wow, Pitchy, that was a quick trip! I can't believe the size of the Irwin, and now it's too small?!!
The lake shore and light houses seem as though they are on the edge of an ocean. Can you see the far shore of Lake Superior or is it over the horizon?

It's nice to see that the Irvin is still around. I used to see it when I was a kid, she was built not far from where I grew up.

Bill, I lived about 20 miles west of Duluth for 2 years, and one thing that is impressive is the great lakes. I started to realize how big lake Superior is when I flew into Duluth and couldn't see the far end of it from the air. I did a little investigation and found out that you can't see the far shore of a lake if it is over 11 or 12 miles across. Lake Superior is ~350 miles long IIRC.

I was near the harbor one day and the bridge tender saluted the ship his little tinny sounding horn after the ship passed through the bridge and the ship answered with that big deep throaty response. WOW! Kind of reminded me of the sound the big mother ship made in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

I liked Minnesota, it is a beautiful part of the world, but it does get a bit nippy in the wintertime!

Yes, the largest iron ore mines are here in Northern MN. the ore is shipped from Duluth and the North Shore of Lake Superior to The steel miles out east. Much of it is used in the auto industry. Ford at one time owned a few mines, trains and the ships for their own use. We also ship grain from the Mid-west all over the world, thus we have a constant movement of ocean vessels here as well. Coal is coming in to the port from MT. and being loaded onto 1,000' ships for power plants out East too. I believe Duluth / Superior is the largest freshwater port in the world. The Lake is 350 miles long and 1,300' feet deep. The largest fresh water lake in the world be size of surface and only second to Lake Bikal in Russia for volume of water. It's fun to live here. We have great Lake trout fishing and the Lake keeps us cool in hot weather. It can also keep us cool when we don't need to be, so in the spring we go over the hill to escape the fog and find nice spring weather.

Passed through Duluth almost exactly 16 years ago returning from the Canadian Silhouette Championships in Edmonton. The Trans-Canada highway was washed out just east of Thunder Bay so we had to drive
round the west and south side of Lake Superior to get to Sault-Ste-Marie, added about 200 miles to our journey!
I recall thinking that Duluth looked like an interesting place to explore but we had no time.

The thing I remember about Duluth as a geologist is the "Duluth Gabbro". I large mafic intrusive that should have been great for ore deposits due to its size, age and location. Unfortunately it has the nickname of the "dilute Gabbro" in the industry as it was no where near as prolific as it should have been. I still have pieces of it in my living room though. Very nice example of a gabbro.

Only because i have no knowledge of the City of Duluth it seems that the down town area is small compared to the population.
I haven`t drove into the city but looking at it on flash earth it doesn`t look like a big city??

Well we have a couple downtowns, West Duluth, West End and the Down town you saw, then the big development is over the hill on the Miller Trunk Hwy or HWY 53. The population is about 85,000 with another high pop. areas called Hermantown and Proctor all connected.
