Looking for .32-20 Rifle Reloading Data with Speer 115 grain

Post by Remington40x »

I recently purchased a Marlin Model 1894 .32-20 and I'd like to load some of the old "rifle" level cartridges using the Speer 115 grain Gold Dot hollow point bullets. Can anyone suggest a source for that data? I've not had a lot of luck with reloading manuals, which seem to be focused on handgun data for the S&W Model 1905 and similar strength handguns. I know that the cartridge was once loaded to two different levels, but I can't seem to locate a source for the heavier loads.

Thanks.

Paco Kelly did an article on the 32-20 with different levels of loads, for different guns. I did a google search for 32-20 rifle data, took me to a S&W forum, then a post directed me to the article. The is also an article on fiveshot.org by Paco, for heavy loads in a strong SAA.

Hornady list 32-20 rifle data but only goes up to 100gr. I use 14gr of H110 with the 100gr XTP with my Marlin. You can check the Hodgdon reloading site. They list 115 gr GC with the 327 Federal handgun loads with pressure ratings. The 32-20 has more case capacity than the 327 Fed. I believe Brian Pierce did an article years ago on the 32-20 in rifles for Handloader Magazine.

I tried to consolidate some of that info here. These are fine rifles. You will enjoy it!

Keep it simple. I have loaded probably 15K rounds for the 32-20. (One 1892 has logged 7,400 rds. since 1974) In Colt Police Positive Spls. and S&W hand ejectors, I use 3 grains of Bullseye with a 115 cast. (825 in handguns or 1050 in rifles)

For 1892's, 1894 Marlins, Remington Mod. 25's, and Colt Lightning rifles, I use 5.5 grs. of Unique with a 115 gr. cast bullet. (1,400 for rifles)

These are loads that work.

You can substitute your jacketed bullet in place of cast bullets with these loads.

Your not going to gain much by hyping it up with large doses of H-110 or 296, except maybe worn out brass after 3 or 4 loadings.-----------------------------Sixgun

Ditto what Sixgun said. I got this data from him and it works great.
Kind regards,

The 2008 Alliant reloading handout shows a load for the 32/20 with a, Speer 100gr HP with 16grs of RL7 goes 1634fps with a minimum 1.56 COAL using CCI 400 primers. They don't list PSI or CUP for the load. A 32/20 has 11% greater case capacity than a .30 Carbine ( LEE 2nd Edition ) if that helps any. Tho the 30C operates at 40M PSI. Hope it helps
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Most reloading manuals won't go where a modern 32-20 rifle can go because there are still plenty of old rifles kicking around from the century before last century (dang, that's a long time ago).
Lyman list loads up to 8.3gr of 2400 behind a 115gr cast bullet.
I only have one load for my 32-20 Marlin, 115gr cast bullet and 9.5gr 2400. That load was worked up to and is not in any manual that I know of. I think it's an intermediate load in Paco's article. I haven't put it over a crony but would guess it is about 1500fps, not fast but accurate, and hits hard enough to topple all the 100 mtr steel rams and about half the 200 mtr rams too.
