considering shooter 9422

Post by MacEntyre »

I've always wanted a Winchester 9422. A friend who owns a gun store has had a beautiful uncheckered Winchester 9422 with a big price tag, over $900, but that's not the gun for me because I want to use it such that it will likely collect show some wear marks. Today he called me to say that a consignment rifle showed up, a 9422 XTR with checkered stock, some muzzle wear and some carry wear... I haven't see it, but I will look at it tomorrow afternoon. He wants $525 for it. Whatchatink?

I have had a few different rimfire leveractions but I rate the 9422 as the best.
Here in the UK we can pick them up cheaper so I can't comment on US prices.

I have one, my brother has the companion 22 mag. Both very good guns, only one I could think of being possibly more or at least as accurate is Marlin 39A (older models)

I think that's a pretty decent price these days. The closet I've seen to it locally is a .22 Magnum model that has seen some hunting use and has a bent front sight as an added bonus. The gun store had it priced at $750 and a guy was trying to buy it the day I was there, The shop would only go down 50 bucks on it.

Prices for 9422s are all over the place right now. I think the price your LGS is asking is high for its condition. Here's a minty early smooth stock 9422 that sold on GB recently for only $560 with 28 bids, IIRC. (The early smooth stocked 9422s usually command a higher price, especially with high condition.) We always have to factor in a transfer fee and shipping. However, for the condition you describe the 9422 at your LGS I'd sure try to move him down to $450-$475 and no more than $500 unless you really want it at $525. If you don't buy it, sign up for 9422 email alerts from GB. I think you'll find a "shooter" 9422 more reasonably priced.

Good luck, and let us know what you do with pics!

For a rugged, handy, and accurate and high-capacity 'shooter' in a short-throw lever action 22 LR (or 22 WMR or 17 HMR), I just love my little Ruger 96's, especially since the 22 LR one has an integrally-suppressed barrel. It's usually the first gun I let a 'newbie' fire who wants to learn to shoot, and they always love it.

However. . . a Winchester 94/22 would be an awesome gun in either 'shooter' or 'collector' mode. If the funds are available, I'd snap it up (maybe haggle a bit over price like others have said); they aren't going to become any less scarce to find in the future.

Lever action 22 LR's are about as much fun as one can have while clothed, sober, and not breaking any laws.

Here are some pictures... the last one shows the strange area on the left side of the end of the barrel, where the blueing is missing.

Thank you! I'm happy! :D

Cleaned it up real good, and tried four different kinds of quiet rounds: Rem Quiet22, CB short, CB Long and Aguila Colibri. Was pleased to find that the Colibri shoots well... I use a lot of them!

It feeds and extracts well. The action is real smooth, and looks brand new inside. The two-piece bolt with tilting lockup is more complex than I expected.

I believe I'll order a Bullseye rear sight for it.

I would guarantee that you won't be disappointed with that rifle, they are slick and reliable.... 8)

It won't take much to clean up the muzzle where the bluing has gone, mine has so little bluing it looks like it's been used since 1873 not 1973...

I have used cold blue successfully on the barrel and mag tube but not on the receiver, it just does not seem to take..
