Puma 92 extraction problem(s)

Post by woodsoup »

I'm a new Puma owner, M92 .38/.357 carbine, and have purchased Steves cd to help me whip this beast into shape.

BUT!! Since the git go, it has not extracted every cartridge/shell.
It makes no difference as to ammo brand, reload or factory, .38spl/.357mag.
They get about half way out and "slip" back into the breach. It's the ejector pushing them back when the extractor lets loose.
I have not done any modifications to the extractor, but have shortened the ejector spring about .075".
could it be the extractor needs more "hook"? This,.. breech \ bolt. vs. this breech / bolt, or this breech | bolt. (the \, / and | represent the hook angle vs the bolt face)

Ya'll got any suggestions? PLEASE!!! :x
.....it's all just stuff.

With the bolt out, hook a cartridge under the extractor and line it up as if it were chambered.

The part of the extractor that contacts the rim of the case should be parallel to the rim, giving as much contact as possible. |=

On my gun, the point of the part of the extractor that contacts the rim of the case is all the way into the groove of the case.

The extractor contacts the case only on the rim and the very tip of the point in the groove.

Maybe the angle of your extractor is allowing the ejector to push the case off the hook prior to the case clearing the chamber. \=

Maybe the hook is not deep enough to fully catch the case. L=

Either can be fixed with a fine file.
Kind regards,
Tycer

Thanx for the info. It was what I suspected, but I thought I'd ask before acting.

One, slow and easy, fine filing comming up.

Before working away with file you might also wanna check the amount of up & down play the bolt has in the receiver. If excessive, it might be the bolt is rising allowing extractor to slip off the rim.

Or, the extractor groove is too shallow;

Or the extractor is bent.

All but the 1st is an easy fix.

Problem found

Post by woodsoup »

Thanx all for your replies and especially to Steve for his offer of one on one help.

The problem was a HUGE burr on the bolt, under the extractor, where it turns over to grab the casing. I filed it off, polished it and ran my 10 dummy rounds through it several times and hand fed some empty casings through it and not one failure.

For the$400.00++ price tag of these guns, you'd think Puma could at least run all the parts through a burnisher (think giant case polisher) to get rid of this problem. :?

Oh well it works now, so off to the range this afternoon to find any more problems. Hope not though.
