The top one appears to be slimmer in the foreend.
Is this true?
My parts gun 39 does not yet have a fore end, and I want it to be slimmer than any 39 I have seen to date.
Anybody got a spare fore end?

Marlin did not add "Mountie" or "M", to the barrel roll stamp, before 1957. A 39a, with a straight grip and 20" barrel, is a Mountie.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

I don't have a spare, but my Cabela's $300 Golden 39M had its price in part due to someone having whittled down the forend to a skinny configuration. That was fine by me, as I've never like the looks of the fat things Marlin insists on calling forends. Their removal of the sling studs and doing a "creative" job of filling in the holes was t'other reason for the price and is something I'm not so keen on.
Not the best image, but here it is with my 9422.

Here! Precision Gun Stocks. Sand paper can make that forend simmer!

9422s are fine guns also. It's a shame they are gone.
