They're getting old! Several Norsk shooters have said that they don't run 'em hard in Norway any longer due to bolts cracking from age and stress fatigue. :(

I guess if it has to crack, BEHIND the locking lug is better than if the lug sheared off...??

The locking lug will shear off, AJ (with continued shooting, if the crack isn't noticed) - those examples are in the earlier stage ("just" cracked), and haven't sheared (yet).

If I had one I wanted to shoot a lot, I think I'd look into having the bolt stress relieved and re-heat treated. Does anyone know if that is available?

Does anyone know what these people were doing/loading these with?

One can break anything, if they so desire to abuse such a rifle.

I've put a lot of rounds down range with my 1898 Krag and it still looks and functions like new.

It's not a K98 or '03 Springfield and should not be treated as such!

I'd be worried that the receiver is likely about the same age and technology, so may be developing micro-cracks as well.

I think EVERY firearm should be inspected periodically for such stuff, and it may be the BEST reason of all to actually go to the work of CLEANING them (so you can see cracks through the grime).

Maybe it's time for a manufacturer to offer a replica!

Replacement bolts would go a long way really. Replacement barrels and stocks are already available, and most of the other parts can be refurbished or replaced without issue.

Worst case, does the bolt come out through your head?

I looked at Mine this morning and it looks OK. I used a jewelers loupe to eliminate the possibility of My older eyes missing something.

Ha! I like that!----------6 To expand on that I believe that if and when the bolt head pops off that the gun will still hold together as the bolt handle fits in a groove in the action itself, acting as a safety back up, so...............forget it, I'm hungry and tired...see you boys later.--------6

I don't know much about the Krag, but I am wondering if those bolts were subjected higher pressure than the original design called for. Could that have been a possibility?

The bolt handle still locks sort of in a recess to hopefully catch the bolt if the front lug shears.
