M44 accuracy project
I have two M44's. I have been wanting to do a accuracy project on these rifle so have started with putting in pillard at the action bolts. I want to use regular hardware store supples. I got plumbing pipe for the pillars. It is 7/16 with the ID of 1/4. it fits the actions bolts. At my first test it seems to make the action very ridged. The wood stock alone feels "mushy" by comparison.

Re: M44 accuracy project
Dumb question, but were they poor shooters?
My m38 and m44 are quite accurate for what they are meant to be. 2-3" at 75yds
In my opinion not bad for a short carbine.
My Finn 39 will cut that in half at 100 meters but that is to be expected with a heavy barrel and
better sights.

Re: M44 accuracy project
I would like that kind of group at 150yards. I think this rifle can be improved. I will post a 100 yard target from the range tomorrow.

And his 91/30. Big difference between that rifle and a
m44/38 carbine!

That is what mine is, from the arsenal, in the box and plastic, complete with cosmoline and all the goodies.
Yeah, not bad for a Russian country boy from the Ural mountains.

Yea, I'd be interested to know what, if any, special care or modifications there were to those sniper versions.2ndovc wrote:Mescalero wrote:Ask Vasiley Zaystev.

Re: M44 accuracy project
I have a post WWII M44 of Hungarian manufacture. It was made in 1953. It has been used a lot probably used in the 1956 uprising. It was made in Budapest. It looks like an old war horse. I think the difference between carbine and Rife are small.

The 91/30's were fired for accuracy. The most accurate were marked with a star proof and then fitted with a
PU or PE scope and mount. They were then issued accordingly.
I've had a couple of each. Accurate rifles if you know how to adjust the mounts. Total PIA.

Re: M44 accuracy project
I have been using this rifle in a service rifle match every couple of months at the local gun club against Garands, ARs, and M1As. This is a 200 yard open sight match standing, sitting, nealing, and prone. No slings or rest. I'd like to do better at the match.

Re: M44 accuracy project
I'm interested and curious to see just how much difference that pillar is going to make. Looks like a simple enough trick, and the reasoning behind it seems sound to me.

Re: M44 accuracy project
It will need pillar front and back and epoxy bedding. I bought a drill press yesterday to get the holes right. The pillars are available from "Rock Solid" of Aluminum that require 1/2inch whole. The homemade ones will take 7/16.

Re: M44 accuracy project
My groups at the range had little improvement, but I have not secured the pillars with epoxy yet. I have not slugged the barrel. Not giving up. I did get the pillars glued in last evening. The next step is to reduce trigger pull.

Re: M44 accuracy project
I completed the pillar installation on the 44 and put in a couple of aluminum soda can washers to lighten the trigger. There is good results. The target is centered and less scattered. This is today's 100 yard target
Here is the previous target before these changes also 100 yard bench rest.

Somebody has to set the match baseline
The next match is Saturday. I'll keep all informed.

Re: M44 accuracy project
A little trick I picked up from the Finnish shooters I knew,, get some rosin same as used on the string instruments bows, melt it down and pour it hot into the stock/ barrel channel, put your barreled action back in and tighten down the screws, it works as bedding compound when it hardens up, they did it on 22 match guns and military match rifles, if it improved the grouping then they went with the full bedding/glass

Re: M44 accuracy project
Are you shooting the M44 with or without the bayonet extended?
I just used roll pins for pillars, ground to proper length.
BTW, the M44 was never meant to be an arm of accuracy. Angle of man @ 100 meters was good enough. Most had hand straightened barrels after they welded the bayonet mount on to the gun.

Mine had no bayonet. The match is off hand with no sling. I will, see if my efforts help.
Re: M44 accuracy project
What are you using for ammo?
My first 91/30 shot 2 foot groups at 100 yards with the first lot of surplus ammo I bought with the rifle.
When that finally ran out years later, the next batch I tried shot 1.5" groups (maybe less) at the same distance.

Slow is just slow.
