I've been thinking about getting one of these pop up campers for my Tacoma.
Pretty low profile can still tow a trailer/boat. And manuver around in the woods with out ripping it to pices on trees and such.

We use a pickup truck camper . Slide it in the bed , take it out when not using it. That way we can pull the boat, dirtbike trailer, or horse trailer and have a place to sleep. It is very versatile.

thing I like about the van idea is that you don't have to get out of the truck to get into the camper, and vice versa. lots nicer if the neighborhood goes to pot to be able to start up and roll without the walk around... like the big guys.

Reading Grizz' post, I thought the same could be accomplised with a sliding rear window in the pickup;
then I thought of Blaine........................... bad idea, not practical.

I know, right? :lol:

I sleep in the drive seat because of my back, can't lie flat. Would still enjoy standing headroom in the van. Crawling around isn't great when the joints grate...

I just went through a similar quest. I wanted an RV of some type and was looking for something that I could drive cross country twice a year. At first I looked at travel trailers, I then pulled a 24' enclosed vehicle hauler across the country and it was a pain to pull into places..so many places I wanted to stop but having a GMC crewcab 2500 plus the 24' trailer parking became an issue. So I voted against travel trailers. While stopped at Wickenburg AZ I saw what appeared to be a Toyota RV club parked in a MickyD's parking lot and they fit into regular parking places, but didn't think much of it at the time.

Then I looked at slide in campers, but having a short 6.5' bed, it seems that all of the campers that I looked at didn't quite fit what I wanted. I even looked at buying a used long bed pickup just for camping and driving cross country (leaving a vehicle at both places on opposite sides of the country)

Well then I remembered those Toyota RVs...mini-RVs that they call them. They made them from the late 70's to 1994. Since it's just me and the wife and a few bird dogs, the mini RV appear that they may work for us. With the V6 models 1990-1994 you should be able to tow a small boat without much trouble. You can find some with only 40-50k miles and they don't break the bank or cause you to go into hock for the next 5 yrs. Most go for 7-14k according to year, condition and mileage. All models after 86 have the one ton axles which was an earlier problem with these mini-RV and caused the industry to die, due to recalls of late 70s-86 models for retro fitting of rear axles to one ton versions.

I've been thinking about a full size van chassis RV for some years now. It's nice being able to stand up and do things while going down the road, and not have to get out and walk around to get to the camper/trailer. I've done the slide in and tow behind quite a bit. Rode with a friend in his van chassis and was very envious. We would pull over, rotate the seats and enjoy the location. You can tow a trailer either enclosed or open. Lot's of options out there but I think I like that one the best.

For 2014 there are a plethora of Euro-Vans from most of the different companies. Mercedes will have a new 2.1 Liter Turbo Diesel with mpg pushing upper 20s....Ford, and Dodge will have entries, as well....Nissan has a V-6 model out right now....Also, next year, I might not be broke :lol: :lol:
