PLUS the $25 HAZMAT shipping charge on top of shipping. Then again, it has been 4 months now since we had any HP38 or W231 powder at the shop. In fact, we haven't had a powder shipment since December. The club usually does a component buy/order for members at this time of year but they've put it off indefinitely because there's nothing to order. No need for shot, wads or primers if you don't have powder. It IS bad and getting worse.

Everybody smells a rat but nobody remembers that as ammo disappeared from the shelves folks got into/back into reloading and bought up the stocks of powders and other reloading components at likewise increasing rates. Many powders are made overseas now and those imports have (new I've heard) restrictions at both the source nation and here that slow the distribution regardless of production rates. There might be a rat in the promulgation of new shipping regulations but the DHS isn't buying up reloading components (at least not directly).
A bit of digression, but I noticed that people were buying what is available, not necessarily for their own use but for trade material for those items they need/want.

Hobie

I have a 4 year old can of HP38. 4.3gr is all it takes loading 38SP, so it lasts a while. I was at Sportsmans Warehouse the other day and they had a fairly good selection of powder, but no 231, 748, etc. No Winchester powders available is what I was told, but they had all the VihtaVouri. (Expensive, but good)
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.
I haven't reloaded in many years and only rifles cartridges when I did. What would be a fair price for a pound of HP38 before the shortage/price gouging now?

$18 +tax at the Gun shop!
Got to tell ya,unless I had a (vast amount of ammo at hand)I would be getting a loading setup.
Heck for $100 (except dies $40 )you can get a setup with about everything you need.---(Lee 50th Anniversary Challenger Press Kit) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQNz2ie5H5U http://www.midwayusa.com/product/242098 ... set-45-acp
Load say 45ACP--------------cases can be reloaded (a lot)and go to Berry's and get a few boxes of (1000 plated bullets)
Got to be able to find couple lbs of powder and some primers!
Then you got at least----(a stash)and have it pretty cheap.
Cause that 45 ACP will do----------when the going gets tough and bad things plan to have their way with you, then its------------ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlOxiwGLAkY
If you can't get it from your dealer, who can't get it from his jobber/distributor, who can't get it from the "manufacturer" who can't get it from the off-shore mill, then, yes, in this case, there is a "shortage..."
I do wish that Hodgdon's had kept the manufacture of so many of their powders here, in the good ol' USA...

Buck

No, I meant on that particular auction. Something not right with it. The shortage is simple supply vs. demand - no mystery there as far as I'm concerned.
