Marlin 336 .35 Remington in gunshop

Post by GregT »

Good Morning:
First, as this is now playing out, my congrats to the Police and other authorities who nailed one of the Boston Marathon bombers early this morning.
To the point. The rifle mentioned in the topic line is located in a gunshop in Hayward, Wisconsin. I have been trying to find one of these in .35 Remington and this one appears to be a nice one. Micro-Groove rifling. 100% blue. Did not see bore condition. Price is $400. I would prefer it to be cheaper, of course. I don't really need it.... Would $300 be a reasonable offer? I had another one that a private individual was supposed to bring in for me to look at. I was ready to offer $250 for that one. That one never happened. Any suggestions?

Up here that's what they go for. If it's a pre-cross bolt safety add another $100 or so to the price. Even though your saying you don't need it but it sounds like you WANT it otherwise we wouldn't be having this conversation.

The 35 Rem. is one of my favorites calibers and I shoot that the most. You can try offering it $300.00 and go from there. Good Luck!

As a north country cheesehead (Wisconsin), I can tell you that $400 is a going price for a good 336 in 35 Remington in a gun shop, as Mainehunter says. In fact, If it's a pre cross bolt safety model, you better grab it, fast, if you want it. Older 336s in 35 Rem do not stay on the rack for long. Very much doubt the shop will take you up on an offer of $300, but you can sure try.

The good thing about pawn shops is they are willing to haggle on used guns and there is wiggle room to be had. START LOW and go up to suit your pocket book. I think it would be a good deal even at $350.

I'd pay that for one if I didn't already have one. It is a GREAT cartridge and a classic gun.

However, if you can smoothly offer LESS than that, and the offer is accepted, you done good... 8)

Thank you all for the replies. Yes, as one member noted, I guess I want it. Stopped in to the shop at closing time today and asked him if there is room for movement.... To my surprise, he brought the gun out of the safe (ALL his shop guns are in 4 large safes he has) and let me take a quick look. Dropped the price from $425 to $375. Spotless bore. Blue wore on sharp edges. This was previously owned by a Wisconsin DNR Warden in the Hayward area. Cross bolt safety. How long ago did they start the cross bolt safety? I will be thinking hard now until Monday...
Thanks again!

I bought a '76 vintage .35 R for my youngest and set it up as a Scout Rifle as he really liked my
.450 Guide gun w/ a Leopold Scout scope but he's a little guy and can't handle the recoil.
He can hit the 200 yd ram 9 out of ten shots with that .35R.

I bought a Marlin 35D ( Guide Gun style) from a member here, just as accurate as the 20" barrel
and a bit more compact. Can't wait to go boar hunting again!!

Did I say I love the .35!

It depends on the model, a 1953-4 Sporting Carbine .35 in excellent condition should bring
$600 or so. A standard carbine (pre safety) same condition, about $400. They are great hunting guns.

You probably would not get a nice one for $400 out here.

$375 seems to be the going price that I see. The older ones usually asks for over $400. It's hard to find a 35 Rem in the $300 range in good shape. I only use the cross bolt safety when unloading , never had a problem of it being in the way.

I'm in the same boat. Have been going to try a 357 die, to size the neck but haven't done nothing in the way of reloading since b4 Christmas. Hope you find some soon.

Graf's had 1 set in stock as of this post. I have a 1955 made pre-Micro-gruv barrel. It is easy to shoot with less recoil than a M94 in 30/30. Plus I am sure you know all the 38/357 bullets work in them to. Had a 16" contender barrel in 35 rem rechambered to 358/444. Always wished I had kept it in 35R. But it shot 125 and 158 gr R-P bulk bullets pretty darn good.

I don't NEED another one, but at $375 I'd be awfully tempted.

At $350, probably beyond my powers to resist.....

Gentlemen! Got the Marlin 336, .35 Remington this afternoon. Shop owner let me have it for an even $375 out the door! Serial number 11055101 (1989). I was sure happy with the price! Now I await dies so I can get to reloading. Thanks for the help!

I think you will find it easy to reload for I use 39.0 of 4064 with a jacketed 200 gr. I think Hobie likes 38.0 of 4895.

Good for you, Greg! 8)

We'll await pics and the results of your loading efforts.

Nice gun. Replace those lousy stock sights with a
Williams or a Skinner setup. On my next one, I
might try one of those Scout scope setups.

I usually get creative with the sights. Will probably have one of those nice brass fold-down front sights and perhaps a Williams receiver sight with target knobs. Put that on the .32 Special. You can dial your bullet right in with those!

I had a circa 1952 336SC in 35 REM that was about 95% I bought that one for $250 in Hamlin PA back about 2003 I think . Sold it on Gunbroker in about 2009 for about $450 .

I'm going to look at one thursday not sure what year it was made yet . But if in decent shape and goes cheap enough I'll bring it home .

I paid $275 for a known problem gun 2 years ago. Great outward appearances, but cycling problems.

Drilled an air vent hole in the follower which solved most of the problems.

You did well at your purchase price. I'd think $400 would be minimum these days.

I shoot 158 gr cast bullets out of mine; it kills pop cans and kids' balloons quite well.

Congrats on the new to you 336/35R. A great price, given what they sell for here.

I prefer my Marlins with a CB safety for unloading purposes. I didn't always like it, but came to realize that the safety offers real utility when unloading a lever gun.

For plinking, try 12 to 13 grains of Unique under 165 - 200 gr cast bullets. ~1200-1400 fps and no recoil.

Enjoy,

Noah

Congratulations on your new acquisition, Greg. You may find that 35 Remingtons are addicting. If that happens you should know that back in the early 50's Marlin made their 336 in a configuration they labelled as "336A" which has regular rifling and a 24" barrel. These show up on Gunbroker or GunsAmerica periodically.
Marlin336A.jpg
And for many years Remington made their slick little pump, first as the model 14 and then as the model 141. These are always available through the internet auction houses. The handiest way to get one of these is to find one that has the peep sight built for the pump -- it is mounted on the receiver but extends back as though it is a tang sight. Or you might find one with scope mounted. Or the folding leaf rear. Or all three sights, like this one
