Your guns are very nice and clean. I especially like the standard pre-war Mod 71. Don't know why but I have always preferred the standard over the deluxe (and I have both as you do also) Maybe because I'm a working guy and the standard identifies with me. My standard is also made in '41 and the # is 20375 Yours close?

Well, I had some pics I was going to post, but it seems that photobucket changed something in all their recent "improvements", and my pics are now too large to post.

Very nice! That 70 just gives me chills. I would'nt dare to touch it. I always wanted a Sako Finnwolf in .308. Always thought it would be great rifle to hunt with. I have a standard model 71 but with no swivels and a 56 Lyman. But yours is nicer than mine. Thats a really nice group of rifles.

Re: I'm tired of gun control politics..so here's XXX L'gun p
Thanks, Six. I had to correct the date of the Model 71 in the post. It's 1940, not 1941. The serial # is in the early 18000s. However, my other transition Model 71 is 1941. In my mind I had them reversed. The serial # of my 1941 standard 71 (pictured here) is 19957. Pretty close to yours! Is yours a transition 71 with a short tang but with a prewar style hammer and buttstock comb? My '41 also has a bolt peep. I've been told that an early short tang standard transition 71 with a prewar hammer, prewar stock comb, and bolt peep is the rarest of the 71 configurations. All things considered that sounds about right, but who knows! I'm sure at that time in 71 production they were emptying out the parts bins.Sixgun wrote:Your guns are very nice and clean. Below is a photo I think I've posted before showing the difference between the long tang stock and the early and later short tang stocks. The rifles (l to r) by date are 1936, 1941 and 1956. (The 1940 in my original post is not in this photo.) Notice on the '36 Dlx and '40 Std (and '41 Std in the next photo) how the comb comes up much closer to the tang than on the 1956 and is shaped differently...more slender looking down and more vertical from the side. Those are prewar features on the Model 71. (I don't have a photo showing the different hammer styles, but in general the top of the prewar hammer looks peened while the top of the 1956 hammer is serrated hammer.)
1941 Model 71
And, NO, you can't have one of those Finnwolfs! (But if you're serious, Jack, send me a PM.)

Victor,
Yes, My standard is just like your first standard. (middle gun and bottom pic) It has the pre-war hammer but does not have the bolt peep.....it has a Lyman 56. It also has something that I have only seen on one other Model 71........a nickel plated loading gate. Its original. Mine gets shot some. I've logged over a thou. with it with 175 rounds in the last week alone
First......drum roll.............With this 71, I was match winner at yesterdays silhouette match. I shot a 32 X 40 with it. Maybe I'll make a post telling the details on the loads, etc. so others may learn.---------------Sixgun

Jack, make that two others you've seen now. My standard 71 with the close serial # to yours has an original non-blued loading gate!Sixgun wrote:Victor,

Drum roll and applause...Good Shooting yesterday! What distances were you shooting?

Some beautiful guns here. A real nice lunch time treat. Malamute, those guns look especially nice in your cabin. That is my kind of decor!

Victor,
Our 71's could be called brothers! Probably made a month apart........at the most. For the load I use a newly commissioned NEI 225 gr (comes out at 212...linotype) pushed by 22 grains of 5744 for 1580 fps. Tackdriver is not the word...with my aging eyes 2" at 100 & only a hair more at 200. I use it for big bore silhouette.....chickens @ 50 meters, pigs @ 100 m, turkeys @ 150 m, and rams at 200 m.--------me
Here's my deluxe, made in '36 as is the box of ammo. never could find any evidence of it being fired, but I'm sure it was.'

I am interested in the receiver sights on the two left side specimens. Identification? Are they factory originals? Bolt mounted?
I have a modern clones clones of the 71 and 1886 guns and I shoot only iron sights. I sure would like to have some neat compact aperture rears like those. Now if I only knew what to look for. If anyone has info I would appreciate a PM. Thanks

Bagtic,
Those are original bolt peeps that are as you say, mounted on the bolt. The bolt has been milled so these sights will stay on. I don't have a clue as to who could do this but it can be done. I'm thinking original sights for these have to be over $500. Not sure if anyone repo's it.-----------------Sixgun

Jack, our 1936 Model 71s also could be called brothers: My 71 on the left is a 1936 with ser. # 1127. Yours is 921. They likely were made within just days of each other! The condition of mine isn't unfired/mint, though, just near mint with an inch scratch on the barrel and an impression line on the buttstock.Sixgun wrote:Victor,
