Re: Thoughts about a 'minimalist' battery...
I've tended to avoid these type discussions lately, they tend to go towards end of the world stuff, which I'm not a huge believer in.
However,....when thinking what I'd want to have in case of a major natural disaster etc, or needing to feed myself over a period of time, either by choice or not, a scoped '06 with good irons for backup, a 22 Smith pistol, and a Smith 44 or Ruger 45 SA would work for making things happen. I tend to keep such things close at hand, as well as a 94 carbine, and ammo, some camp food, camp gear, etc, change of clothes, and cold weather gear in my truck. If simply paring down for econimic reasons, those listed, another 94 in short form, the 71, another pistol or two, and maybe another bolt gun and scoped 22 rifle would cover most of the bases. If zombies, screamimg hoards of Canadian Invaders (sorry Kirk!), or such, a commie self loader with a ton of ammo and mags would be worth having, but such things, guns or scenarios, aren't high on my list. I sold my nice Colt H-Bar AR several years ago and dont really miss it. Its a fun plinker, but not very practical for anything I do in real life, or realistically expect to do in real life.

Re: Thoughts about a 'minimalist' battery...
When I was young and first married (19!) I had what could be called a 'minimalist' battery. I owned.....:
Model 64 in .25-35
Marlin .357
Colt Python
Ruger MII
Winchester M37 20 gauge
Lots of powder and primers from my earlier pre-married teen years and cases of .22's
I see no reason why I couldn't do just as well with the same outfit as I did back then, I managed to feed my young family exclusively on wild game as the years went by, deer, ducks and grouse were what were brought home the most, though occasionally a bear was hung on the front porch of our little log home.
Today though the 5 usually sitting outside the same are only a hair different as I live in predominantly elk country.....
M64 .30-30
Marlin CB .44 mag
OM Ruger FT .44
Ruger MIII SS slabside .22 LR + 2X Leupold
Ruger Red Label 20 ga

Re: Thoughts about a 'minimalist' battery...
These would be one part of my minimalist battery:

The Ruger, Para Ordnance, and Marlin all use .452" bullets and give me two guns to use 45 Colt and two to use 45 ACP. I put the Charter Arms in the photo because I think it would be cool to have one of the 45 ACP ones they're coming out with, or a similar-sized gun in 45 Colt (maybe they'd have to chamber it for a shorter lower pressure round?).
The Marlin Camp Carbine would add yet another 45 ACP weapon to the battery:

Another 'part' of the battery would be some 22 LR guns:

A shotgun would be a must, then some sort of bottleneck cartridge rifle(s) for longer range at maybe a couple power levels (i.e. 338 Lapua and 338 Whisper?).

...my original 'musing' was more along the lines of simplifying inventory as opposed to a 'what you can carry on your person' kind of thing. In other words, a person might have a dozen or more firearms, but just thinking along the lines of how to minimize cartridge inventory and bullet inventory, and yet still fulfill whatever his or her personal needs are.

OK ok. Yellowstone supervolcano just went off. What are you taking with you before the ash cloud buries your place?AJMD429 wrote:Grizz wrote:how'rya gonna transport all that stuff Doc?...my original 'musing' was more along the lines of simplifying inventory as opposed to a 'what you can carry on your person' kind of thing. I currently have 5 long guns and 5 handguns. In your scenario I'd be leaving by truck and I'm takin everything! Have to abandon the truck??????? I have five sets of hands in my family so I'm still takin EVERYTHING!

Heretic. Remember me hitting a t-post at 100yrds and the gong at 300? That's pretty practical if you ask me.Malamute wrote:I sold my nice Colt H-Bar AR several years ago and dont really miss it. Its a fun plinker, but not very practical for anything I do in real life,

You'all are good sports. I have a boat that can transport my stuff. If I can make enough round trips....

Re: Thoughts about a 'minimalist' battery...
Yeah, but it's a little weany caliber. There's big scary stuff out in the hills here, I like bigger bullets. 30-06 shoots good enough for me for a light rifle.sore shoulder wrote:Heretic. Ha! I have a perfectly good wheelbarrow, with runflat tire! I also have spray paint to camo it.

Injuns killed those big scary things with sticks.

Ok, +1 for the cart, -2 for no AR to put in it = deficit of -1.sore shoulder wrote:Cart. Hasn't anyone seen Fiddler on the Roof?Grizz wrote:how'rya gonna transport all that stuff Doc?

I trained on these. Very scary and powerful piece of equipment. Replaces an entire battery of regular artillery.

I was in on one of the first transitions from M110 8" to MLRS when I was stationed @ Ft Sill then again at my Battalion in FRG.sore shoulder wrote:No.Old Savage wrote:The minimalist battery is a .22 Revolver.

Firing both 6-packs is, IMO more impressive than firing off one of the Sneaky-Petes they hid behind fake 6-pack doors though. It's those 12 ICM loads that can clear an entire Grid Square. The sneaky-pete, as shown, was (in my day anyway) strictly "special purpose"...
