It pays to experiment.

Post by TedH »

I had just about given up on finding a slug load that shot to my satisfaction in my smoothbore self defense shotgun. It's got a ghost ring sight setup, so I was trying to find a slug load that would be able to consistantly put a slug in a cantelope size target at 25 yards. Yeah, that does not sound too hard, does it? I believe the problem lies in the larger size of the cylinder bore, that measures .732". I tried a couple different slug designs, several different wads, several different hulls, and varied powder charges. Just as I was about to concede defeat and send the barrel off to have screw-in chokes installed, I tried one last combination. I was very pleased with the results. Remington high brass hulls that were originally loaded with 00 buck, a modest charge of HS6, pink Winchester 1 oz wad, 520 gr. Lyman Sabot slug cast, and a 6 point star crimp. They aren't the fastest slug load, but they are well over 1000 fps. The accuracy is about as good as I can expect with this smoothbore I think, especially considering most other slug loads I tried would barely keep 5 shots on a paper plate at that distance.

I don't know about self defense but a group like that would be effective on anything...

Good job.

I wish my .410 experimentation was as successful...

So far, all I have accomplished is case failure & breaking an extractor...

Re: It pays to experiment. 12 Gauge Lyman Sabot Slug

Post by zzr7ky »

Hi -

I've been working with that 12 Gauge Lyman Sabot Slug also. I am having similar results. So far 44gr Blue dot is grouping nice like yours. I need to get if over the chrono before I make any more.

I'm using the cheapest Federal low brass shotshell hulls and an 8 point crimp.

Mike

Yeah, now my only problem is I can't find that mold anywhere to purchase. A fellow forum member was kind enough to mail me a handful to try before buying the mold, now everyone is out of stock.

Hi - My browser is acting up...

Anyway, I got my mold new off Ebay for ~$68 delivered 2 weeks ago. I think it came from Optics Plannet.

I've got a 12ga/1-oz BP/ML RB mold ( I think it's .690) if you need to borrow it...

That thought has crossed my mind too. I might take you up on that offer once I get done playing with these. Thanks!
