TAKE JOY IN OLD DOGS

Post by Blaine »

By Donna Swajeski

Glenn Beck read this in tribute to his dog Victor....(Sniff...)

Their joys are simple. A soft bed. A scrap fallen from the table that the younger dogs missed. The memory of a treed squirrel. A stormless night.

White whiskered faces and legs crooked as question marks.

Old Dogs…their sweet Buddha bellies hang over crossed legs as they fall asleep in a coveted patch of sun. Dreaming of out-racing their shadows down long, shady lanes.

Once they danced by your side. The very definition of joy unleashed. A perfect poem caught in shining eyes and wagging tails. They have followed you faithfully for years. And would plunge into fires, untamed wildernesses, raging waters if you asked.

Now, they struggle to catch up. Their pace slow but their hearts still valiant.
Their cloudy eyes are starting to dim and go distant, tuning in to some invisible world. Just beyond your reach.

Don’t go you say, as you scratch the tender part between their ears. Stay longer. I can’t imagine a world without your fur pressed close to my cheek. There are still so many roads we haven’t explored.

And they look up at you with a wisdom that just slays you.

Their backs are bent, not from the weight of years, but from the invisible wings they are growing
That will soon take them to a place where once more they are warriors of speed
Drunk with the sights and scents of a thousand meadows.
Able to leap high enough to touch the wing of the tiniest butterfly.

A place where they will now wait for you to catch up.

Thanks Blaine, it reminded me that I have several old friends waiting on my arrival. A cocker spaniel and a standard poodle. The first an almost dainty critter just right for a wee tot to lay his head on while they both nap, and an oversized, overgrown puppy til his last day.

A fitting tribute, thanks.

The loss of my best friend, Prince, last August, is still very much on my mind.

Glenn was weeping during that part of the show. He's got to put his dog down and is doing it tomorrow.

I was listening to Glen Beck's radio show yesterday as I was driving to my wife's place of employment to break the news to her that we were going to have to put down our 15 year old husky, Sandy. Her hips had been weak for a while now, and this morning she was unable to stand and hadn't eaten for several days.

As I parked the car, I listened to what Glen was saying about Victor, and I knew the pain he and his family felt. Somehow, listening to him, it eased the pain I felt about the path ahead of me. Cheryl and I went home and lifted Sandy into the back of the Forester and took her for her last ride. Later, as the vet injected her, I knew from the look in her eyes and the smile on her face that she was finally free of the pain that had plagued her for so long. As our eyes met for the last time, I could see her say "Thank You!", and then she laid her head on her paws and fell asleep. She was the most loyal, loving friend I have ever known, next to my wife. Cheryl and I are both having a tough day today...............

Not long ago I was listening to a preacher on the radio while I was working. He said that there will be horses in Heaven because the Bible says in Revelation that one day Jesus will come back ridding a white horse and we'll be with him. Then he said, if there's going to be horses why not dogs? My wife isn't a dog person, but I know they sure do bring joy to a lot of people.

Then there's my favorite for those who have suffered a loss:

Our Dinky turned 12 last New Years and the cataracts are starting to cloud her eyes. I try to spend extra time with her as I know she won't have many more years left with us. When she was a pup, I thought she was the most exasperating thing I'd ever run across. Now, I wouldn't trade her for her weight in gold.

I've lost my two best friends over the last three years. My best girls, Tasha and Abbey
can never be replaced. A pure bred English Lab and a Boxer mix.

I've had some great dogs but i'll never be able to replace those two!

Many thousands of years ago, when our ancestors lived in caves; a pregnant bitch wolf had broken her leg in a pack hunt.
Abandoned by the pack, she could not keep up.
Driven mad by hunger, she could not hunt, she smelled food at a place where the two legged ones lived.
The men cursed and threw things at her, the women took pity on her and fed her.
She had little ones, and the children played with them.
As they grew, the men sensed the 4 legged ones, were more attuned and learned to watch them for signs of game .
This is the way it happened......... it is the best deal species homo sapien ever made.

Pretty sad here last couple of days. Poncho, our German Spitz Klein, (read: over grown Pomeranian) disappeared. At least 14 years old as he showed up the day after a huge tornado and was a mature dog then. He had almost no hearing and you could see the clouds of cataracts in his eyes. Can find no trace of him but here where we live the coyotes or a cougar or even a bobcat could have made supper of him. 10 pounds of loving dog though. He is missed.
