Llama MiniMax .45 question(s)

Post by awp101 »

One of the guys I work with asked if I had a solution to his problem with the above pistol which is a Commander size 1911 style. I have some ideas but need some help.

The problem:
Fires 2-3 rounds then the next round hangs up nose high like it hits the top of the chamber

What he's tried:
New mag

What he suspects:
Weak recoil spring

His main question for me:
Will Colt springs fit and work?

What I don't know/haven't asked yet:
Bullet profile and weight (it is factory fodder since he doesn't reload)
Does it happen every time? Rapid fire or slow fire?
Does the rest of the mag fire fine for 2-3 more rounds or does the problem happen on all subsequent rounds in the mag?

It's got a bushingless barrel and the barest excuse for a feed ramp on the barrel. The frame acts as the main feed ramp. Would/could that area be polished to help? While I feel it would help in general, I don't think that's the solution for his current problem.

Thoughts and ideas?

Thanks!

#1: Is the problem with Ball or with TC/HP?

If it works fine with Ball, it's a Feed Ramp issue.

After tatt, it takes .45 guy to fire & figure out what needs tuning.

If I didn't know better, I would think you were talking about my Llama. It hangs up on round 3, 5, 7,8,9, and fires round 10. Ball or HP, it doesn't matter. Hot rounds seem to work better, only hanging up 3 times per magazine. 3 new factory magazines did not make any difference at all. Mine is currently a paperweight.

I had a Llama MiniMax in .45 for a few weeks some years ago. Long post short: it never did get so it would feed even hardball for even ONE magazinefull without at least one jam (frequently several). Tried multiple magazines and gave it plenty of rounds in an attempt to get it to to "break in". It never got better and it's long gone and unlamented.

Good luck w. your work buddy's gun, but I'm afraid you're likely looking at a sow's ear /= silk purse situation.

OK
Mine is in 9mm
no issues with the issue mag.
the reload mags are Meggar, do not fit flush, stick out the bottom of the magwell
but function fine.
So if mine works and you two don't........ what is the difference other than caliber?

Polish the feed ramp. That's POLISH, do not remove any metal. Also polish the face of the slide where the round must rise up against it. Put an 18 pound spring in and yes the Colt spring will fit. I would also install a shockbuff, only a dollar I think. If that doesn't work find a good 1911 smith or trade it off.

Thanks guys!

It happens with factory hardball and multiple times per mag.

I'll pass along the info but with the caveat that it may not help anyway. Too bad since it's a cute little bugger with it's stainless (?) frame and black slide...

The MiniMax .45 Subcompact is a fat little thing with a 10 round magazine. Mine currently has a spring from a Kimber, and that still didn't help. The spring in the subcompact in the captured type with a larger spring around a smaller spring. There is no room to put a recoil buffer. The original spring suffered a catastrophic failure. The original grips shattered shile shooting. No kaboom, just the spring totally let go and I had to replace it. Kimber had one that fit perfectly, and function, such as it is, was restored. Next range session, I felt the grips just crumble. I have replaced them with some from Llama for the full size, and I cut them down. They are not pretty, but I am not concerned. I have polished the feed ramp. It is a very small piece of metal about 3/16th inch long. If I use Cor-Bon, it does function better, and only stovepipes on 1 or 2 rounds of 10. It is still the only pistol I have that I do not trust. As I said, it is a paperweight.

Mescalero, if you want it, it is yours. I can't get it to work, and as it is, there is no value to me. If you can get it to work, then that is great.

piller IF what I am finding is correct, yours is a copy/derivative of the Para P10 or possibly Para Warthog. IF that is correct then Para parts MIGHT work.

I realize that's a lot if IFs and MIGHTs but hopefully it's a starting point...
