Range Report W/Pictures

Post by Bigahh »

Had a great weekend at the Deer Shack with my old dog Magnum. This 1st picture is looking down my range after magnum and I set the targets out. As you can see it is far from Spring!

I set up my NIB 1984 Winchester with a Williams FP sight, and tried my pet load out of it. I am not pleased with the results. This is the best 50 yard group I could get. The front post is just too large. I could not even see the 1 1/2 inch orange dot, the post covered it completely. The post on my 64A is much smaller. I will be working on changing this soon!

I have been thinking about loading the 170 grain FP 30-30 Bullet in my .308 BLR, and tried most of the day Saturday to get it to shoot. I think I found a very good load. It is the 170 Grain Hornady FP behind 37.5 grains of Varget. Not a screaming fast load my any means, but it doesn't have to be where I hunt. I chronnied the load at just under 2300 fps. This is from 75 yards, I could not get to the 100 yard mark as the snow was drifted badly there. I have a 1.75-6x Leupold on the gun. Can't wait to get back up there next weekend!

EVERYBODY knows they make the best target holders - and you're just doing your civic duty de-cluttering the streets by taking a few for a better use in life!

Looks like a fine day Bigahh :D

Me too - and depending on who the signs support, I don't even bother to change them out!

Cooool, both them guns n your loads cut the mustard :D I'm glad you took your dog too. I had some nut trying to tell me it was not safe to have my dog with me whilst I field tested a load in my 94  I had never met this feller before but boy I did enjoy cutting him down  You know one of them self appointed experts type
Anyway good for you.

You said the post covered you dot at 50 yds. Try holding so your target is sitting on top of you front sight. You can't hit what you can't see. just my .02. I sure wish we only had the little snow you have. So far this year over 12 feet. We lost 3people last week on a roof cave in at a warehouse another man this weekend in his home, and I 'm sure more to come if it gets mild and rains as they say it will.

Enjoyed your report and photos. I think 170 grains at 2,300 fps will be sufficient to take care of a deer. :)
