I've been offered a "like new" Mosin-Nagant (no idea which model, or where it was made) for a hundred bucks.....Seems like I couldn't possibly be hurt...Yes? No? I am ignorant of such things

This is sort of what I thought....I'm highly inclined to pick it up, grease it down, buy some ammo while it's available, and stick it away for awhile.

Everyone should have a Mosin and a few spam cans of ammo.

Bought mine (91/30) for <$100 and converted it to '54 configuration...

Couple of other mods I want to do but don't have the time right now.

As noted, the 7.62 x 54R Russian (the first "R" actually stands for "rimmed"), is on the .30-06 level. Ammunition can still be had relatively cheap (at least before the most recent run-up), as well as the rifles. I picked one up for Y2K a couple years ago, and got one for one of his scout buddies while I was at it. The rifles are only going to go up in price, so $100 is a deal if it is a shooter.

Agreed.

The 7.62X54 is also the oldest service round still 'in' service. 1891-2013 and still going strong, as a machine gun and sniper round.

Most of the other major players of the time period are long out of service in any significant numbers.

I've been fortunate to shoot all major examples of the Mosin-Nagant except a Finnish rework (the M39), from a 1917-dated Imperial Russian model, the full size WW1 piece, a handful of 91/30s, M38's, M44s and a few other oddballs.

The 1917 dated model shot the nicest with the 91/30 a close second. Not a fan of the carbines off the bench, but all work well, though a few of the 1941/1942 production models occasionally need a 2X4 to work the bolt.

None are fun to shoot from the bench and have recoil that seems to exceed 8mm, 7mm Mauser, .303 or .30-06 due to the stock design.

$100 is an excellent price unless it's totally destroyed.

OI, I'd modify that to say every right handed person. I've messed with '03's, 1917's, various Enfields and even an Italian Cracano (sp?), but I have never liked having to reach over and work the bolt. I also ran into an interesting situation with a buddy's Enfield. He had it well sighted in for him, but shooting left handed, it pulled the shoots off. I think it had to do with the way the recoil effects a right handed shoulder as opposed to a left handed one.

I have to say that my dad had a saying to which I also believe. "Every man should have one good rifle, and know how to use it". He was a firm believer in bolt actions in 30-06. I have his old Winnie, as well as my much newer (though still an old gun now) lefty Remington in that caliber. But, my "one good rifle" would be my Springfield Scout Squad in 7.62.

Yeah seriously that's a good deal if it's pristine, and sometimes they are. I had one, a parts leftover gun that I put together with every item I didn't want from other Mosins, junk stock, sewer pipe bore, mix/match etc., and I still pulled in $75 for it on trade. And after the dealer put it out it sold in less than a week.

I kid you not that I was going to torch it and just toss the remains!! So if junk is worth 75 bucks, a good one is certainly worth a hunnert.

Oh, and they're fun to bang away with.

If it's the more common 91/30 we see now, $100 is still a fair price if it's good shape with a good bore.
I'd check for matching numbers as well.

If it's just about any other model then it is a definite deal, I've had some through my hands that I got
some big $ for.

Most of them are great shooters and surprisingly accurate. I have a Finn 39 made by Sako that would equal
my 03A3 if it had better sights, though the 39 sights are much better than other Nagants.

And if you get it and don't want it I'm sure there's someone around here that would be happy to
relive you of that unfortunate burden.

They're not pretty but mine shoots quite well. Picked it up about 12 years ago when they were dirt cheap and got 3 of the spam cans of corrosive ammo from a sale at Dunhams. My first year of college it was the only centerfire rifle I had at school and I shot a pile of critters with it including deer (neck shots with FMJ as I was broke and little else was available at the time for 7.62x54R). For a while it was my truck gun and now it lives in the corner of the shop in case of critters going after the chickens.

Blaine, here is a wonderful and exhaustive site on these historic rifles. I have probably owned 15 over the years, though none currently. The availability of these rifles prompted me to get a C&R license some years ago, although I let it expire as it was bankrupting me to have Century Arms calling me every week or two with crazy deals.

You don't need it. Buy 25/06, 308 brass, bullets, powder. A new scope, Tactical light/laser, or any other supplies you need. Only thing I regret not getting is the Fleet Farm had 8mm Mausers for $69.95 couple years back. Instead of buying 2 of'em; I bought $150 or so worth of .22 ammo.

Back in '99, I was offered the pick of the litter on some Mosin/Nagants for $50 to be used as a Y2K gun. I decided to go with something that the ammo was a bit easier to find. A 1892 clone in 357 Mag.

I was buying 440 round spam cans when they were $29.00 for the corrosive and $40 for the non corrosive stuff.
The Czech Silver tips are non corrosive and super accurate. Like OI stated the Silver bear and I'll add the S&B are good stuff and the S&B is reloadable with a split case here and there.

The one I really regret letting go was a Spanish Loyalist marked Dragoon Rifle. I still have the Spanish marked Russian Winchester '95 that came with it but I'd love to have the pair back together!!

We need an update.. Did you get or not??

I think you would be better off using the c-note for ammo/loading components for guns you already have..............unless the gun was really, really clean, with an excellent bore, and then only if you need it for a truck gun or something you leave out in the barn.

There's cases of those guns at most gunshows here for like $89 and they don't sell. We look at them as a railroad tie with a barrel and a trigger or at best, a tomato stake---------------------Sixgun

The shop near me used to have two huge racks and on them kept an average of sixty of those rifles on hand at any one time. ZERO of them to be found 30 days after DipWad shot up that school.

When I first started out with Mosins 20 years ago, I remember picking through a pile of Model 91s -- the "first edition" that saw service against Japan in 1905 and in the Bolshevik revolution. Most of the guns in the pile were made by Westinghouse and Remington. $60 each, your choice. Big 5 Sporting Goods still runs the 91/30s for about $100 from time to time.

Not lately where I live. Even Mosins have dried up at the shops in Tucson and they weren't $100 for a year or more before today anyhow. Cheapest I'd seen them for some time was $110 plus tax or shipping, but that was some time ago and now even that's gone. I'd also noticed that the really pristine - like new and refurbed - examples seemed to be gone also. Any sort of collectible markings or anything unique sends the price right up too, so we're talking strictly barrel guns here.

Amazingly, Timney makes a trigger for them! If you get one that will shoot (and some of them DO shoot) it'd make a nice improvement.

In 2010, and even up until last year, they were still $89, and a lot of other things were 1/4 of what they are selling for now. I'm talking about today, right now, you will be very hard pressed to find a nice one for under $200.
