My pup isn't doing good. UPDATED

Post by TedH »

My little buddy Sampson the Daschund isn't doing too good. Last couple days he's had bad diarrhea with lots of blood in it, and last night he made a puddle that was some kind of clear fluid with blood in it, lots of blood. You can tell the poor little guy just feel terrible, wouldn't even get out of his bed to get a treat. Dropped him off at the Vet this morning. Hope it's nothing too serious. Any idea's what could cause this? I don't think it's anything he ate, he hasn't had anything different at home, and he never leaves the yard to get into any other trouble.

UPDATE,
Steelbanger had it right. Vet said Sammy has a bacterial infection in his lower intestine. Gave him some special food to eat for 5 days, and two kinds of medicine to give him, one a powder to put in his food, the other a pill to cram down his throat or coax him to otherwise swallow with food. The Doc said if he isn't showing signs of improvement in three or four days to bring him back for xrays and further diagnosis, but he said this treatment will fix 19 out of 20 dogs with this problem.

Thanks everyone for the prayers and well wishes.

My lil Beagle had something similar couple years back , blood comin out both ends ! Scared bejeebus out of me ! Turned out it was some bug contracted from a stray cat that had done its 'business' in his yard ! After 2 weeks of doggy dope and a thorough sanitizing of his yard with a diluted purox spray he hasnt had any more trouble .

The bug attaches itself to stomach and multiplies rapidly . Really makes them sick .

We had a dachshund recently do that. One of the grandkids fed him a bunch of chocolate syrup. Darn near killed the pup. Had to have an IV on him for a day or two.

Some dogs can take a bit of chocolate, some can't.

Hi Ted,
Sorry to hear about your pup. You made the right choice of taking him to the vet and I'm sure he/she will diagnose the problem. Building on what Hayseed mentioned above, we had a mini-schnauzer that developed similar symptoms and found out her condition was due to a clostridium perfringes infection (http://www.vetinfo.com/clostridium-perf ... -dogs.html). Apparently, the little girl picked it up from other animal feces being present in the soil.

Hope Sammy's up running around soon !

Prayers up----------- could have the pup got any type poison(or grabbed something already poisoned??)
I know with my brother----------his wiener dog(his Vet told him to keep anti-poison charcoal mix on hand(home) and when they are throwing up blood like that first thing treat them just in case??????????
Weiners are diggers and eaters of what they dig-----if your dog say got a mole that was poisoned ate some of it ??------
if charcoal wasn't given real soon-----they are potential goneers before the Vet can fix them once they go into Vets ????????????
Just a thought! :?: Course I ain't no Vet either!

Same symptoms my Lab had a few years ago,she ate a pork bone out of the trash,I guess it tore her up a little inside, she wouldn't eat for days and the vet said she wouldn't make it and wanted to put her to sleep,I told him he was nuts, went home and made her hamburger and rice and she ate it right down, fed her that for about a week everything cleared up.

Hope you dog gets better let us know how it turns out.

oh yeah,I don't go to that vet anymore.

Hello Ted,

My 10 year old beagle had the same thing back in January. Black, bloody stools and throwing up too. Took him to the vet, along with a stool sample, where he was diagnosed with a bacterial infection in the intestines. He stayed overnight the first night because he needed to stay hydrated, then medication and a bland diet worked like magic and fixed him right up in about a week, but the bloody stools were gone from the second day. I only hunt him in January and February of the year and this is the second year in a row he was unable to hunt because of sickness. He loves to chase rabbits but I won't risk his health by taking him out too soon after being sick. Incidentally, the vet told me that she had two other dogs in the hospital with the same diagnosis.

Dogs, they get to your heart straight through your wallet!

Hey Ted, really glad to hear he's ok. I used to raise and train German Shepherds, and they too are prone to certain digestive tract issues. One home remedy I learned of is feeding them canned raw pumpkin (no spices etc) and raw ground turkey. It's probably a lot like the food the vet prescribed, high fiber high bulk. Clears up diarrhea quickly. However I don't know if it would be effective against a virus or bacteria, so, fwiw.

Ted, My little Yorkie Andy was having issues that sound exactly the same as your pup.
The vet treated his the same also. The powder he gets in his food is called "FortiFlora"
from Purina (contains Live viable naturally occurring microorganisms) like Yeast.
I give him a packet twice a week and it keeps his little tummy happy.
He was a sad little fella until the vet started him on it.
I hope you find a regimen that takes care of him like we have with Andy.

I don't know if this is going to work for him or not. He won't hardly eat the food from the vet that I put his medicine in, he still has the bloody runs, still throwing up, won't come out of his bed to take a treat. I can get the pill down him, but I don't know how else to get the powder in him. Maybe put it in a syringe with a little water and try to shoot it down his pipe?

Ted, several of us have suffered grievous dog traumas recently, and I am asking the Good Shepherd to spare you and Sammy, and bring him round. Don't be shy about getting him back to the vet. If vet bills are an issue, PM me and we can try to figure something out.

That's a very kind offer Bill, and the dang bills are always an issue, but our Vet is very reasonable, and will work with you to see that the critters are taken care of.
