The tilt piston engine
Thought some may find this interesting, it`s a Liney engine.
The piston is a thin waffer , the crank is above the cylinder center-line so when the piston goes towards the head it tilts and lets all the air or steam pass by. When it comes around the lower part of the stroke the piston is straight and seals and the air can push it.
These engines can get some real high RPS.

Re: The tilt piston engine
Pitch, I love that little guy. Running it on compressed air? How does the piston rod fit into the piston?
Re: The tilt piston engine
I can see this video, but not the last 2.
This engine is so cool. Do you have a picture of the piston, I'm not seeing how it operates as a valve.
So. Could a guy scale this up and drive his boat with a pressure cooker and coleman stove?
Not the right application. For marine power want slow and huge pitch like a side wheel or tug prop.
Or a compound bellows I guess, if a guy wanted to stairmaster his way to Patagonia.....

Re: The tilt piston engine
The piston is welded on, solder would work also, just drilled a hole in it and welded rod on the backside.
The piston tips on the return stroke alowing air to excape past it and on the power stroke it seals somewhat allowing the piston to be pushed.
Very crude design and wasteful of air.

Re: The tilt piston engine
COOL !! There are other toy engine designs that don`t work out in full size applications.
Fun to play with though.

Re: The tilt piston engine
Pitchy, I was wondering if it might be that simple! What did you use for your flywheel and bearing? Would that thing run on steam?
Re: The tilt piston engine
Flywheel i had laying around, no bearings and yep it would run on steam if ya had enough of it.Bill in Oregon wrote:Pitchy, I was wondering if it might be that simple! What did you use for your flywheel and bearing? Would that thing run on steam?
Go too this site, the one they sell ya can blow in it and it will turn 200 RPM they say.
It`s a lot smaller than mine and nope i don`t think it would be worth building a bigger one.
Don`t buy everything on that site now Bill.

Very neat Pitchy, did you confirm it runs on compressed air? God Bless.

Re: The tilt piston engine
As always, Pitchy has made life interesting... and does it with all kinds of toys. From big boy toys to little boy toys...
Now Pitch, you have to explain to me how you got the crank to turn backwards to the direction of the flywheel... Instant reverse switches? LOL
Nice Job making it and making it work.
Thanks for the entertainment. SnR
